am seriously considering moving to Perth at the start of next year (actually, had a talk with a mate tonight and there could be a chance of just doing it within the next few weeks, although i think it was more talk over a few beers) and just wondering where the best areas to live are around.

Would most like to live near a (good) beach of some description and somewhere close to the night life.

Checking on domain.com.au there was some dirt cheap rentals around scarborough (150 a week for 2 beds), and one of the other joints around there said it was 2 mins from the beach. It's actually probably the only suburb i've heard of from WA.

But yeah, just wondering if you guys could let us know where the best areas would be, how easy it is getting a place to live and a job and all that soughta stuff.....

if anyone has a link to some form of a map in Perth that would be appreciated too.

www.whereis.com.au is a pretty good map site.

As for a reasonably cheap area to live near the beach, you're probably in the right area with Scarborough, any further south and you're in to the money zone, any further north and you're a long way out into suburbia.

As for suburbs in that area, you could look at Scarborough, Doubleview (next inland, probably nothing really suitable), Innaloo (next again, where I live, can be quite cheap, better public transport links if you need them). There may be some reasonably cheap stuff in Trigg as well (one north of Scarbourough).

You *may* be able to find something cheap around Claremont/Cottesloe, but keep in mind that they're quite expensive suburbs, so if something's cheap, its likely to be cheap for a reason.

Of course IIRC you're coming from Sydney, so everything would look cheap to you for a while

Subi is a pretty awesome area... got Subi oval and quite a few hot nightspots and pubs near your area... close to town too.

Perth is obscenely cheap compared to Sydney - and particularly eastern suburbs. The rental market at the moment is very slow, so you should have no problem picking uo something that is decent, cheap, and in a good area.

The best area to look is between the City and Fremantle as it's near the nightlife, beach, and has good transport.

Subiaco is nice. About four train stops from the city and nine stops from the beach. Cottesloe is another are that should be considered. Rents have never been more affordable in this area. Right on the beach, 8 mins to fremantle, 15 mins to the City. About 12 train stops to city.

Scarborough - not bad but a bit yobboish. Good beaches, but only buses go into the city.

Hard to compare these beachside suburbs with Sydney, but roughly Cottesloe = Manly, Scarborough = Cronulla.

Cottesloe for the chicks :)

Im thinking of getting an apartment in Subi since its a great area.

If you wanted something cheap you could go into the suburbs a bit. We are building in Dianella and it's 15 mins to the city and the beach. But then Scarborough is nice and less pricey than City Beach or Cottesloe. But again, coming from Sydney, you will find most areas here amazingly cheap. The beaches are really good too. Not as much nightlife as Sydney, but still plenty of places to go.

Being an old Sand-gropher now resident and Swans member
this is what I think too.

Cottesloe is good and so is Subi. Rent is ok, but house prices are high - nothing compared to Sydney tho :)

The belt of suburbs south of the river along the new orrong road-graham farmer freeway junction is easily the hotspot in perth at the moment. Places like rivervale, lathlain, carlisle, vic park are only 5 minutes drive to the city now down the new freeway and yet to be overpriced like their direct counterparts north of the river such as subi, north perth, east perth, mt lawley etc. Maylands is also an attractive suburb worthy of consideration. Also, keep in mind that if the new stadium is built on the belmont racecourse site, you'd be literally next door to it in any of the suburbs I've suggested.

Just have a look at the realestate sites royweston, professionals, Century21 etc. plenty of scope

Young and single I would be looking to be central. Beaches are only 20 minutes away from East Perth, West Perth, Perth, Subi etc.

That's a bargain.

Thanks for the info guys. main thing is probably saving up money for air fare and a bond but shouldn't be too hard.

As for finding work, I suppose its the same as anywhere else. Work is easy to find if you're not particular about what you do, but gets more difficult accordingly when targetting something. You'd probably be aware of this already, but "job x" in Perth will not pay the same as "job x" in Sydney.

If you don't mind my asking, what do you do?

yeah, that was my next question what salaries are like over there. it's all well that rent is about 60-65% of what it is in Sydney, but it's not much point if the salries are also about 60-65%.

In terms of what i do, at the moment i just work bars. pretty cruisy stuff. But would most likely look to get into some form of IT job in terms of a career. do a web-site for my cricket club, but never done it on a professional basis.

Salaries are very different but if you have never been employed as a professional you want be able to compare to know the difference. Salaries are lower but so is cost of living.

My general view is the salaries in Perth are not as low proportionately as rent and the general cost of living.

IT jobs are easier to find in Sydney than Perth, but I guess you'd be looking at entry level positions, which *should* be OK in Perth. The job market for IT in Perth has certainly improved in recent months; has been pretty bad for a couple of years prior to that. If you have any qualifications though they would help. No matter where you go though IT isn't the easiest market to break into.

I would say that salaries are lower for sure, but not that much lower that you don't get a much better standard of living here. I would guess that a job earning 50K in Perth would get 60-62K in Sydney. Depends on the industry to some extent. At the lower end the difference is probably even less marked.

I'd agree with that from what I know. To be honest, I found London was more affordable to live in than Sydney in terms of income/cost of living ratio - as long as you had a professional job (working in a bar on the other hand, avoid London like the plague).

True but this can be offset by the Living Away From Home Allowance if you are not moving here permanently. Further things like car rego, insurance etc are a lot cheaper.

I have lived and worked in both Sydney and Perth and run an IT recruitment co. and this has been my experience

What my statement means is that all up it is more economical to live in Perth, ie Wages are lower that Sydney, but the cost of living is even lower.
