IT was a night when Essendon's young brigade was put under the intense pressure of AFL football - and if the Bombers' 58-point thrashing of West Coast in the NAB Challenge match at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night is anything to go by, the future looks bright at Windy Hill.
Leroy Jetta (three goals), Angus Monfries (three goals), Jobe Watson (29 possessions), Andrew Lovett (27 possessions) and Brent Stanton (27 touches) all impressed in Essendon's 15.10 (100) to 5.12 (42) rout of the reigning premiers, leaving coach Kevin Sheedy excited about the potential rewards Essendon's young guns could deliver the club.
"We've got a lot of players playing footy together for the first time this year," Sheedy said. "We're really pleased with what they tried to do.
"It was an opportunity for a lot of players to get a chance to come over and play against some very good players from West Coast.
"We wouldn't know who's going to be good enough to play finals this year. Hopefully we can get up there but we've got a long way to go yet. But today was the first step in the right direction."
The only sour note to come out of the match for the Bombers was an injury to forward Courtney Johns, who received a wayward knee to his hip that will sideline the talented 22-year-old for at least a week.
Both sides entered the match missing a host of stars. Chris Judd, Andrew Embley, Ben Cousins, Dean Cox, Daniel Kerr and Michael Braun were among the big names rested for West Coast, while Essendon was without the likes of James Hird, Scott Lucas, Scott Camporeale, Jason Johnson and Adam McPhee.
After an evenly fought opening term, Matthew Lloyd ripped the game wide open with three second-quarter goals as the Bombers turned a one-point quarter-time deficit into a 23-point half-time lead.
The lead stretched to 30 points early into the third before goals to Quinten Lynch and Ashley Hansen closed the gap to 16 points at the final change.
But any chance of a comeback was killed off quickly in the last term as the Bombers piled on 6.1 to a solitary point to run away easy winners.
The highlight of the match belonged to Jetta, who shrugged off an opponent late in the match before dribbling through a miracle goal tucked deep inside the left forward pocket, leaving even Sheedy in awe.
"He's a pretty quiet young man, he doesn’t talk a lot, but he's obviously got some good talent as far as I'm concerned. It's just trying to draw that out of him bit by bit," he said.
David Wirrpanda was sensational down back for the Eagles in a defence that was peppered throughout the night, while Chad Fletcher, Tyson Stenglein, Matt Rosa and Steven Armstrong continued their impressive pre-seasons.
Eagles coach John Worsfold admitted his team struggled to create clear-cut opportunities for its forward line.
"We just got beaten in terms of forward opportunities. They had a lot more than what our guys did. Shots on goal, that's the starting point. We need to get more inside-50s to start with - from that you'll get away more shots on goal," Worsfold said.

Were making a habit of beating premiers in the pre-season comp.
