Didn't have the greatest of days, but I heard something was up with him.

Supposedly he had the flu, but still played. Also heard he had a corky for half the game. Still good on him for fighting on.

Yeah I noticed some limping during the game.
looked as if he was walking of injured at a point too

where was in the final quarter?
was he on the bench?

Letter to Knights:
Dear Mat,
I know you're new here but thought I'd point out that you have a 900 goal forward at the club - LEAVE HIM IN THE ****ing SQUARE!!!!!!!!

Yours, :)

He was actually in the goal square for the entire final quarter. Couldn't really do anything else.

In the post-match press conference Knights briefly addressed this, saying that playing him from the square all match was "too predictable". And I've got to agree with him. As he said, our goals came from lots of places today, and that's got to be much harder to defend against, and more congruent with our game style. If we focused our attack on Lloyd and Lucas we'd: a) have lost today, and b) slow the team's development.

Lloyd kicked the majority of his 900 goals during a different era of AFL football and with a younger body. Going on goal count alone we would draft Tony Lockett. I really agree that he's more than useful there, but not for the whole game. It depends on the particular game and how his body is -- the Carlton game is an example of how it was managed perfectly.

That era you talk of was one where we had a fast dominant midfield - is that not what we're trying to build here. Lloyd is in the twilight of his career and yes, he may have odd game where he picks up a bag of possessions up the field but he does MORE damage in the games when he does what he does best. We don't HAVE to focus our attack on Lloyd - just leave him there and give him space and kick it to him IF he's the best option. If he pulls them in - GREAT, if not, that's what all those crumbers are there for. No, sorry, but the only place for Lloyd in my eyes is in the 50m arc - at least he's presence there forces them to deal with him.

Looked like he had a crook knee, as they said on tv, but with that crap coming out of Walls mouth who knows.
I agree keep him in the square when he has the correct match up. Presty didnt do to bad, was mostly in arms reach of Lloydy.
Last week against the Roos however, Lloydy should have stayed in the square all game, cos when he was he kicked goals!

I think I see what you're saying, but I don't think it's that simple. First -- the midfield is one part of the game, and the game has changed almost entirely. And just 'cause the midfields are the same in both 'eras' isn't everything, especially as we're considering Lloyd as a forward.

But to just leave him in the F50, give him space and kick it to him "IF he's the best option", and then relying on crumbers -- it's very old-school football (which isn't necessarily bad) that has been combated by flooding and zones over the years. We can't play the whole game like that. Sure, put Lloydy down there as a pinch hitter and a tall target for 60-75% of the game, but with Knights' new ideas about moving the ball forward -- running through lines, handball, speed from all angles, etc -- to have all that coming forward to the same thing everytime is restrictive and not in the same vein as the changes the club is going through generally. And besides, has everyone forgotten how well Lloyd did in his varied role last year? He still kicked ~65 goals last year like that.

I'm not sure that the game has changed quite as much as everyone thinks. Sure they're MUCH faster and we have zoning (what a blight) and flooding (another one) etc., but look at our great '99/2000 team when Lloyd was at his peak. Mercuri, Misiti, Longy, Bewick and, when needed, dominating out of centre and supplying Lloyd and Lucas "lace up". But, most importantly, ALL able to kick goals themselves along with Caracella, Blumfield, Rama, etc. Point I'm making is, leave him there, kick it to him IF he's firing and in best position and, if not, kick it themselves. At least he's taking the best backman out. Play as a decoy of you like and lead them away so Jetta, Lovett, Davey etc can come in and do the Merc's, Joey, Longy, Bewick role. I think he's best served to stay where he plays best.

Gutsy effort to stay on the ground yesterday. But it seems like he's going through the nervous 90s atm (890s??). Last week's shot and now yesterday...just kick the bloody 900th and get it out of the way!!

The changes you mention (zoning and flooding) are what make that kind of football difficult, though. The thing that Knights seems to be heading towards is similar in that there's multiple goalkickers and streaming forward, pushed just a little further than in previous years to beat the zone. And for the flood -- tall timber. It's a dual kind of thing, IMO, and partly why Lloydy needs to have a dual kind of role. But I know what you mean when you say "I think he's best served to stay where he plays best" -- I just don't think it best serves the team, in the short or long term.
