AS WITH his much-more-than-me take on captaincy, Cameron Ling is too respectful to embrace the idea. Yet he surely long ago reached the point where his part in the tapestry of Geelong - not just the football team, but the place - outgrew the enormous shadow Geelong has cast over his life.
Outsiders can have their reservations - about town and, this year, team - but Ling's passion is unwavering. ''I can't think of anywhere I'd rather have grown up and been a part of,'' Ling says. ''I see myself as being lucky that I've, one, grown up in Geelong and been part of the community of Geelong, and two, that I've been fortunate to play footy with Geelong, the team I love, this terrific footy club.''

Like Lingy. I love this town even with all its faults.

Unlike Lingy. As a kid I could only dream of playing in a Premiership for my beloved Cats. And I did dream quite often.
