Now analysing the Freo game is a deadend & thankless task - yes they won, but they were almost useless for 3/4 of the game.

However one thing that stuck out in the final 15 mins or however long it took to score a zillion goals was that there were a few on the run from 50 type goals.

Although possession footbal seems flavour of the month I believe that the Lions are more suited to this type of play than the short chip kick.

I cant see conventional play working against say Essendon, but this might!

We have players that are capable of kicking these type of goals, Notting, Lappin, McRae & even perhaps Cupido.

What might be a good tactic is having a couple of the players such as the abovementioned do this all day. They will inevitably score some behinds, but will also break up the defensive flood as defenders move out to them.

Port do it well & I believe that Brisbane have the players to also give it a crack.

Anythings got to be better than the monotonous kick into a congested goal square with no hope of anything happening at all.

Leigh came out at the start of last week saying that that is what they were working on. I just think that it shouldn't be a tactic that on works when they are hot. Most of the game none of the players were bave enough to have a go, but when things start going our way, then they'll have a ping. It has to be something that they have a self confidence to do...otherwise they never will use this ability, cause yu can't count on the team being 'hot' week in week out.

Gentlemen,

It is my belief that football is a very basic and simple game complicated by coaches and players who think they are cleverer.

Since I was a boy I was taught that straight "up the guts" was the ONLY way to play the game. You did this because it was the shortest way to your goal, your biggest and best players were (or should) be there, and if the ball does come to ground the flankers were there to take the spoils.......simple.

I didn't see the game or any part thereof but from Beau MacDonald's comments in the papers today, it seems it took us till 10 minutes into the last quarter to realise that our "spine" was better than theirs.

I hope we continue to develop this style of play. It is very simple and we used it to wonderful effect in '99, particularly on the 'Gabba. Not only is it simple but very hard to combat as the opposition have very little time to react and end up playing a loose man in defense. This naturally makes them defensive. We attack, they defend.

Thats how I like to see it happen.
