With the impending threat of free-agency, more players are being signed to longer contracts. How do you feel about your club locking up a player on a four/five year deal? Does the security outweigh the risk of injury or loss of form?

Essendon - Hurley, yes
Geelong - Selwood, yes
Collingwood - Pendles, yes
Sydney - Reid, yes
Richmond - Deledio, yes but would rather Cotchin and Martin.

Beats losing players just because they want a extra year or 2 on his contract. But as 24+ year olds they would want to be superstars like Ablett and Judd..

These days injuries are very rarely career ending with better surgery and rehab. Quite happy with teams locking away there young stars away till there late 20s.

Knowing we have a young player like Hurley who wants to be at the club for the next 5years can only be a good thing.

St Kilda fans thought the same thing with Hamill...

There are obvious benefits, but my point is sooner or later, and with the multitude of long-term signings the odds are shifting towards sooner, a team's going to get bit.
