I was always a huge rap for Paul Roos as a coach and even hearing his analysis of teams when he is comentating shows he has a great football brain but I think Longmire is now a better coach than him. I felt our backline last year was brilliant the way they worked together to prevent teams from scoring despite the massive inside 50s that teams racked up against us. Then this year we lose Johnson who will be one of our best ever defenders if he can get back to what he was and continue for a number of years, we lose Shaw and then Mattner, all critical to our back 6 and yet we rebuild a back 6 almost as good by adding a rookie, (Rampe) and 2 experienced players in McVeigh & Malceski who are in career best form. Our midfield is deeper than any going around with Kennedy, Jack, ROK, Hannerbey, Parker, Goodes, Bird and even McVeigh, Malceski & McGlynn going through it at times and then we add "son of a gun" Mitchell. Pyke & Mumford are working great together and then 2 player who have always been bit players for us in Everitt & White are starting to play at a level that will make it hard to drop them yet we still have to fit Tippet, Reid, Lrt, Jetta & Shaw into a side that humiliated the Crows. If the coaching staff can keep players fit we are a big chance again in September. Yep I'm a big rap for Longmire!

Bit early to make a definitive call on that yet. Roos took the side to two grand finals and was the major force behind the culture change in the club. The Swans were also in a much worse state when he took over and he was working with less talent than the Swans have now. Longmire needs to win the premiership again before this is worth considering.

I'm not going to get into who I think is better, I just think they're both playing important parts in making our team one of the greatest teams in Australia and probably the world. It started with roos and horse took over the mantle without skipping a beat.

I backed horse in from the beginning when others were calling for his head early on in the piece and hes continued to prove his worth, came on with little fanfare and has continued doing an amazing job. Stoked to have him as coach, stoked to support an amazing team like the swans.

I just did a search for old threads about Longmire, both on here and other boards for a bit of fun. There's a few posts that are pretty funny in hindsight.

Pretty confident I don't have any egg on my face.

Made the point last night, pressure needs to come on Horse NOW. Yes he's in his first year and we shouldn't be calling for his head, but that doesn't mean he gets a free ride through his first year. He's been absolutely pathetic in some coaching decisions.

I'd hope Roos re-signs until, say, 2014, so Kirk can step up straight away. I've always been very hesitant in support for Horse, as I do think he'd just keep us playing the same way

I still don't think he's a great coach, I think we're just seeing natural improvement in our players

Memo Swans Board. Ditch the dud.

Yeah nothing to worry about, mate.

I think the most impressive thing for me is how they both managed the smooth transition, I think its a testament to both of them and the club how this was planned and executed and players and we as supporters are reaping the benefits of that now ...
My thoughts exactly, a club like Collingwood, or moreso, eddie, could learn a thing or 2 from our great club. Goes to show that too much power in the hands of one man can be detrimental, and usually ends up that way. That's why it'll never be a roos vs horse thing for me, it'll always be the swans vs the rest, and thats how it should be

Kinnear Beatson worked for both didn't he?
If memory serves I think we changed recruiting managers at the end of 2006, so he was with Roos for 4 years. The first player he ever drafted here was Pat Veszpremi.

Has definitely grown into the role and is looking better with each game we play.

Seaby as sub anyone? :)

Please don't remind me of that....

All in all I am incredibly confident with Longmire in charge of this great club, He has done incredibly well with the development with several of our players and I rate him as highly as any coach in the league.

Erggghhh I'd forgotten about that. Longmire has generally done an excellent job and seems to have the support of the players. I know Norf fans are extremely annoyed they don't have him.

Yeah, was tad worried we'd gotten into a "crazy vossy" type situation with Horse choosing talls as the sub in just about a monsoon... I don't think the sub choice can be firmly placed on his shoulders alone though. Overall I have been very impressed with the big Horse and his team. Have evolved our game style in such a positive way all the while maintaining that culture and attitude that got us to 2005 & 2006. Let's all hope he's got a couple more premierships up his sleeves.

Great summary.. i actually wasn't the biggest fan of Horse at one point, especially in 2011 i think it was when we lost to Hawthorn in that Semi Final, his tactics were completely fuked up.. But now it seems his got everything perfect!! love him !!!

Makes it all the sweeter!

Knowing their board, they would have failed in some way, even without the succession plan. Extending Brad Scott to 2016 looks like a worse and worse decision with each passing week.
