Re: Poker News

It's man v machine and the winner takes all

Poker champion Phil Laak has a good chance of winning when he sits down this week to play 2000 hands of Texas Hold'em - against a computer.

It may be the last chance he gets. Computers have got a lot better at poker in recent years; they're good enough now to challenge top professionals like Laak, who won the World Poker Tour invitational in 2004.

But it's only a matter of time before the machines take a commanding lead in the war for poker supremacy. Just as they already have in backgammon, checkers and chess, computers are expected to surpass even the best human poker players within a decade. They can already beat virtually any amateur player.

Re: Poker News

OK, this is big enough news to warrant my temporary return.

Annette_15 just won the WSOPE. Just amazing! So jealous of her talent.

1M GBP = AUD 2.4M  (she's 18 for crying out loud)

ETA: **** it, might as well stay now. I had planned to stay away until September 27 or 28, which is when I plan to start playing again. I'll have to catch up on all the new posts over the past few weeks. For the record, I haven't played at all, haven't missed it either. Backgammon on the other hand, I have been playing.

1 Duke 2,000,000
3 Liebert 1,000,000
4 Coren 941,513

Depending on when Annette's cheque is converted to USD, it will be either just beat or just fall short of Duke's 2 million.

Using http://money.cnn.com/data/currencies/index.html, her win converts to $2.011 million.

But using http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/fds/hi/business/market_data/currency/default.stm, the win converts to $1.997 million.

And with http://finance.yahoo.com/currency, it's $1.996 million.

The Hendon Mob page should be up before too long (it will show a conversion.)

Crown fined for short decks

IF YOU'VE ever felt the odds were unfairly stacked against you at the casino, it's possible they were — unintentionally.

Crown Casino was last month fined $35,000 for six breaches of the Casino Control Act involving incomplete decks of playing cards or tiles. In gambling parlance, this is known as a "short deck".

Three breaches were detected in September, November and December last year during games of the popular Texas hold'em poker.

It is believed that in at least one instance the dealer continued with the game despite realising that the deck was incomplete, affecting the odds.
Documents posted on the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation website confirm that the three breaches cost Crown $15,000.

The fine took into account "the period of time taken to detect the error and the fact that in each case the breach was the result of human error by casino staff".

Another breach, attracting a $7500 fine, occurred last November during a game of Crown pontoon, when an extra card was included in the decks. Human error was to blame.

Crown was also fined $5000 last December for a game of blackjack played with an incomplete deck and $7500 in February for a game of pai gow involving an incorrect set of tiles.

Anti-gambling advocate Tim Costello said the fine was small for a company such as Crown.

"They clearly do far more harm to the community than good but they enrich government coffers and this is like being slapped with a wet lettuce for them, not a fine that would be enough for them to take it seriously," he said.

Crown spokesman Gary O'Neill said such problems occurred in a tiny proportion of hands dealt. "The fact of the matter is that at Crown we would deal literally millions of gaming hands throughout the year," Mr O'Neill said.

"On each and every one of these occasions, the error was detected by Crown's supervisory staff and reported to the VCGR."
The chairman of the Interchurch Gambling Taskforce, Mark Zirnsak, said the fines showed that Crown needed to be closely watched to prevent people from being ripped off.

"The Commission for Gambling Regulation now needs to keep a tight watch to make sure that Crown fixes its systems," Dr Zirnsak said.
Casino card games are heavily monitored by supervisors and surveillance cameras.

Decks of cards are supposed to be turned over regularly, with so-called "card count backs" used to ensure the correct numbers have been used.
Crown was fined a further $10,000 for security breaches in October and November, when posts were left unmanned by guards.

http://www.pokerpages.com/tournament/schedule2980.htm

New event is the "Championship Mixed Event", where eight games will be played - Limit Hold'em, Omaha Hi/Lo, Razz, Seven Stud, Stud Hi/Lo, No Limit Hold'em, PLO, and 2-7 Triple Draw.

Also, I read elsewhere that the trophy for the 50k HORSE will be named after Chip Reese.
