St Kilda has secured the services of North Melbourne key defender Luke Delaney after confirming a trade today.
The Saints sent pick 77 at the 2013 NAB AFL National Draft to North Melbourne in exchange for Delaney.
Delaney arrived at North Melbourne via the 2009 rookie draft before debuting in 2011 and earning a permanent upgrade to the senior list at the 2011 NAB AFL National Draft. He has played 26 games in total.
Originally from Grovedale, Delaney played with the Geelong Falcons at TAC Cup level before embarking on his AFL career.
"We are pleased to secure Luke in a trade from North Melbourne. As a developing key defender, we are confident that he can provide valuable support to our defensive group in 2014 - particularly on the opposition's key forwards," St Kilda Head of Football Chris Pelchen said.

"Saints land Delaney and improve draft position" i can't see no draft position changes?

Yeah noticed that.. Maybe the Hawthorn pick swaps, just waiting for Holmesby to write it up and put in online?

DEAL DONE! Delaney for pick 77!

North let him go cheap at 77 and I think it only fair to acknowledge that.
Yes, we gave them a free hit for a premiership tilt with Dal as a FA but it goes both ways.

Delaney was selected at pick 25 in the 2009 Rookie Draft.

Delaney impressed in his first year playing for Werribee in the VFL before a shoulder injury ended his season prematurely.

He switched from Werribee to North Ballarat in 2010 as the Roosters’ won the flag with Delaney a vital part in the premiership.

He began the year well, before a wrist injury temporarily halted his progress in the middle of the season, but returned in time for September glory.

2011 was an exciting season for Delaney, who forced his way onto the senior list when Nathan Grima was ruled out with a broken finger.

He was immediately thrown into the deep end on debut, manning Jonathan Brown. While Brown booted four, Delaney won numerous on-one-one contests and proved he could match it with the best.

He subsequently played eight of North’s next nine games.

Delaney underwent shoulder surgery and looked set for another year of rapid development in 2012. He ended up playing 13 games for the season, but largely relied on injuries.

He played an integral role on Tom Hawkins in round three, and collected a career-high 20 disposals against GWS in round 23 before he was left out of North Melbourne’s elimination final side.

This year senior opportunities proved hard to come by. Delaney didn’t (play AFL) until round 19. While his form remained good in the VFL, North Melbourne’s wealth of key defenders proved to be a sticking point.

5 games, 12 goals conceded, average disposals 10.6, KE 83.9%

Delaney’s impressive VFL form for North Ballarat was rewarded with a call-up to the senior side in Round 19 to face Geelong. From there the defender played each of the last five games, looking solid in the back half. His work at ground level had improved significantly from his previous stints at AFL level, as had his disposal, reflected in his efficiency statistics.

May 5: Delaney changes direction
"He defended really well and hardly got beaten all day. He was also really good offensively. He used the ball really well. It was a good even game on both sides of the footy." – Josh Drummond

May 6: Bringing the agro back
“For me, it’s just about getting back to the basics again because that’s when I play my best footy.”

July 23: Delaney soldiers on
“Once you’ve been in the system a few years it wouldn’t show much leadership if I hadn’t learnt anything and passed it onto the younger blokes who are coming through.”

I think Delaney might surprise a few of us... He's looked at as a bit of a stop gap until we can develops our own KPD but sometimes it's just opportunity that a player needs.

I'm going to assume that's an Instagram filter and not someone who doesn't know how to focus!

Anyway, I like the cut of his jib - a big, dour backman. Will make a massive difference for us even if he's not Matt Scarlett.

VFL reports:
1 Shoulder.
2 VFL Not his best outing down back. Had his hands full.
3 VFL Stood Hogan and was beaten comprehensively.
4 VFL Solid game in defence. Rarely beaten.
5 VFL Defended well in the Roosters back half.
6 VFL Defended well and was hardly beaten all day. 24 disposals also.
7 VFL Bye.
8 VFL Back after a month out and competed well in defence.
9 VFL Rarely beaten in defence. In good touch.
10 VFL Clouston troubled him early but he fought back well.
11 VFL Bye.
12 VFL Terrific down back again for North Ballarat. 17 disposals, seven marks.
13 VFL Sturdy again down back in win over Bendigo.
14 VFL Continued his outstanding form in the Roosters defence.
15 VFL Competed strongly in defence and can hold his head high.
16 VFL Bye.
17 VFL Important late. 19 disposals and eight marks.
18 VFL Another great effort at the heart of the Roosters defence.

Blake's replacement

In the best players 8 times in 14 games. After round 15 (his last VFL game) he was leading North Ballarat's B&F.
