He has played all of his junior football up forward and has earned a reputation as a goal kicking forward who plays with flair. His draft camp results suggest that he has a great vertical leap and is quick off the mark. He knows where the goals are but strangely enough he is being played as a defender in Westies reserves. He is occasionally shifted up forward but he mainly plays at CHB. Could AFC be grooming him to play the role of Nigel Smart / Ben Hart down the track? He is 190 cm and 84 kg but has one of those bodies that will fill out nicely in time.

Could Luke Jericho take over from Nigel Smart / Ben Hart down the track as the player who is capable of playing on both tall and short???

Thoughts??????

Interestingly enough Stiffy, when I was watching the pre-season internal scratch matches, Jericho was playing as a HB flanker in virtually every one of them, and did rather well. Perhaps they do see him as a defender long term.

Against the Eagles at Norwood Oval he played as a wingman, and had a pretty good game.

He's a bit of a Brett Burton type in many ways. Athletic, quick, high leap etc, and as you say, plenty of flair.

I'd rather see him groomed as a flanker type forward/ wingman rather than a defender, because of the exciting qualities that he has. I wonder if the change in role from what he has been used to in all of his career so far has slowed his development down a bit this year

I don't get it macca23. If you have a player who is a natural goalkicker why on earth would you groom him as a defender. Finding a natural goalkicker is harder than a rebounding defender. Surely the kid would be better of being played up forward or as you said as a flanker. What do we get to gain by playing him as a CHF when clearly he doesn't have the body of a KP player. I just find it rather weird!

Yeah, that's my point too. Begley and Torney have given us new defensive options that we didn't have last year, and we need to develop forwards for the long term. I reckon this kid is good enough to be one - but not in a key position.
