Lynch closes on Tassie job

THE possibility of Alastair Lynch coaching Tasmania's representative football team is moving ever closer.
The triple Brisbane Lions' premiership full-forward met with AFL Tasmania general manager Scott Wade to discuss the offer and work out a program for the Brisbane-based Lynch to coach the game against Queensland at Bellerive on June 7.

"He has shown genuine interest, but the No. 1 issue now is, has he got the time?" Wade said yesterday.

"That is first and foremost, and if he has got the time, whether we can work out the logistics of it all and he's comfortable with that. But there is genuine interest."

The team to take on the best from the QAFL will be selected from the new 10-team Tasmanian State League, which starts on April 4.

Wade said the face-to-face meeting with Lynch, a member of Tasmania's Team of the Century, was very positive.

"It is more of if he wants to coach, what does he need us to do. Alastair is now thinking about that issue," he said.

"There is a consensus it is a three-week program.

"You would actually pick your squad three weeks out from the game.

"Week one would involve one training session and it would probably involve Alastair being down for at least two days, and at least two days in week two and a good part of week three.

"We agree on that, it is just a matter of Alastair finding the time now, that's the issue."

Wade said he expected a decision from Lynch soon.

"We haven't put any urgent deadlines on him, but Alastair is the sort of bloke who will want to make his mind up fairly quickly," Wade said.

Queensland has appointed Jason Cotter, who led the Maroons to victory over Tasmania in Launceston two years ago.

If Lynch does take the job, he is likely to coach against his former Brisbane premiership teammate Robert Copeland, plus former Melbourne and All-Australian ruckman Jeff White and former Devils best and fairest winner Jordan Doering.
