when i go to the G i sit in the MCC right on the wing. and it is obvious that we have trouble moving the ball from defence to attack. the main reason for this is that we don't have anyone leading up at the person in possession. we have 2 great forwards, but the problem is that they both don't like to go outside the forward 50.

hopefully gumby will be the one to fix this problem next year, or perhaps knights will play mcphee in a similar role ryan o'keefe plays for sydney. i don't think too many key position defenders would be able to go with him on the lead, whilst he would be too strong in a one on one contest against a back flank.

remember that we have nashy and nlm to play on the back flanks.
i would like our forward to look like this:

mcphee-----lucas -----gumby
davey ------lloyd------monfries

with lovett and dempsey rotating with monfries on-ball

but the problem is that they both don't like to go outside the forward 50.

Good point. I remember a game this year when most people thought Lucas had a bad game however I though he played an unselfish one providing a link up through the middle of the ground. With Lloyd another year under his belt maybe Scotty can come up the ground more.

Generally I think we will and have to run harder if we are to succeed at the G

The bigger ground exposes our weak midfield more, we can get away with it more at TD.

I would put it down to the lack of pace we had going through the midfield last year, our poor skills and our inability to work both ways.

Our forward line is our strength, and they thrive on quick delivery. Quick delivery enables them the space to present. At Telstra Dome, it's far easier to do this. With Davey, Jetta and Dempsey injured for large parts of last year and with Winderlich and Lovett missing games as well, we rarely had the guys to break the lines and get it in quickly. This enabled teams to 'fill the hole', and it made the job of Lucas and Lloyd an arduous task.

Our skill level also blocked this delivery. If we miss a pass going forward, that gives the opposition some crucial extra seconds to work back. All of a sudden our options become limited and we get bogged at half forward. That happened far too often last season and I hope Knights' skill focus helps significantly.

Our midfield can be one dimensional. Jobe Watson is great at getting the ball at stoppages, but struggles to work back on his opponent. Brent Stanton has a tendancy to play loose. This frees up the opposition for ease of delivery into their forward line. At Telstra Dome, it isn't so noticeable because working back isn't nearly as difficult. Given the width of the MCG wings, it's far, far more difficult.

Knights has mentioned all these issues as areas that we must address, and I'm hoping on significant improvements in 2008.
