With Warney gone for a year, will MacGilla be his automatic replacement in the Test side, or will Hoggy be given a chance? I would personally rather see Hogg in the side because he is a better batsman and fielder than MacGill, as well as being as good at bowling.

Everything that's happened in the last couple of months suggests that Hogg has jumped ahead of MacGill and would get picked first for the West Indies tour.

I'm pretty sure that MacGill will get picked as the second spinner, although Nathan Hauritz would be an outside chance to get the spot.
 
MacGill will do for now, Hoggy for one dayers, Hauritz and White for the future. White has to keep improving though, dont want him to wind up as a great white hope that didn't go all the way.

MacGill is the man to replace Warne, now way Hogg can be considered for a test spot. Hogg is handy in the One Day form of the game but is laughable at the proper stuff. Cameron White is nowhere near ready yet and Hauritz is probably still a little way off.
 
I reckon you take Hoggy to the Windies as your main spinner and Hauritz as the backup.

Although I am disappointed that there's no Shane Warne for a year, we must move on and therefore Stuart MacGill will get an opportunity to be the number one test spinner with Brad Hogg to tour the West Indies as we'll need another spinner who can turn the ball past their left-handers... Lara, Chanderpaul, Gayle, Hinds and Jacobs.
 
I'd say Hogg and MacGill are neck and neck at the moment. MacGill is more experienced and the better bowler, but Hogg is a better batsman and fielder. Do you go with a pure bowler or take a chance on a very, very good all-rounder?

That is why I would rather have Hogg in the side. Although he is a class bowler, MacGill is a pretty crappy fielder and his batting isn't much better than Glenn McGrath's at the moment.

Hogg is not a very, very good all-rounder at all. Jaques Kallis is a very, very good allrounder, if anything it is debatable whether Hogg is an allrounder at all.

At first class level he has a bowling average of 46, Andy Symonds has a better bowling average than that, and a batting average of 31, once again Andy Symonds has a better batting average than that. And Symonds is a better fielder aswell, well that's that settled then, Symonds is our new test spinner :rolleyes:
 
MacGill is the second best spinner in the country..simple as that. Straight swap for Warney. His record in Test and first class proves this, keep Hogg for the one-dayers.

Hopefully he can keep that temper in check.

MacGill should be ruled out. He cant bat or field, and his behaviour is terrible. Hogg is a much more viable option, i think he has jumped ahead of MacGill, and MacGills suspension just sealed the deal.

Fair comment.

The other thing to look at is temprement (sp). MacGill has quite a few black marks against his name, whilst Hogg has a pretty clean record in that area.

I know MacGill is thought to be a better "long game" player, but didn't Hogg put his name up in lights with a strong performance against the Poms in a 4 day game at the WACA, after a strong one day game at Lilac Hill?.

Don't really know if Hoggy really believes he is an allrounder, it's just that he bowls and can wield the willow with some skill.
 
You cant have Macgill and Lee in the same side they relieve all pressure that the other bowlers manage to build.Theres room for one all out attacking bowler (Lee) but two is too many.Macgill just bowls too many four balls.
 
It's hard to tell how we should class Hogg. I'm not sure if his bowling is threatening enough to be a Test spinner... he played for WA as a batsman for the first few seasons and won his Test spot against India almost by default - there really was no-one else. Obviously he's improved his bowling a lot, but I'm not sure he can be considered for a Test spot solely on his bowling. His batting and fielding make him a viable option for ODIs where a bit part can have some impact on a short (50 over) contest... I don't think he is up to Test level (yet). In other words I don't see him making any 100s or taking any 5-fers.

Neither do I. I can see him taking 3-fers regularly and making a string of useful 30s and 40s though.

Hogg has proven that he can bowl well against tail enders and, when you have the likes of Lee, McGrath and Gillespie dealing with the top order that will be useful.
 
Hogg could well be the next 'Bevan' - touted as a great spinner, topline batsmen etc but couldn't cut it against sustained short stuff, lost his confidence and bowling went out the window as well.

I agree wholeheartedly with whoever it was that said to be an allrounder you need to be able to hold your place as a batsman or as a bowler. I don't think Hogg is there yet.
