I would actually prefer to see him playing on a wing when Harley comes back into the team. But yep, having a good season, but I'm not surprised because he was very good towards the end of '06.

Taken a long time for him to produce this kind of form on a regular basis, but if he continues in this vein the wait will have been well worth while, really compliments our defensive unit with his ability to play on opposition talls or smaller forwards.

He does cough it up every now and then in a stupid manner, but I really rate him. When he runs and kicks the ball he looks such a classy player. He is doing a great job at the moment and he has really built on the good second half of the season last year.

I thought he was great towards the end of the last season when they started to push him up the goround more. He does commit the odd turnover but tell me a player in the league that doesn't... I spose it's more how often u make them rather than if u make them at all...

I've always rated him, one of our better users of the ball on the team.

I'll own up to being one who hasn't rated Mackie previously but I've been very impressed with what I've seen of him this year. GO MACKIE.

regards,

REB

Same. Turned it around big time.
I remember games up to near the end of last year that every time Mackie would get the ball we would cringe......
Now?
Only one thing - can someone please get him onto Max Rookes or Josh Hunts weights program....he sometimes looks like the wind could break him in half.....or is that just me?

Does anybody else see Mackie as an eventual replacement for Harley or Scarlett?

He is the same height (192cm) as both but just lacks the mussel and merciless that both have developed over the years. I think that in a few years, after some pounds have been gained, he will have the bulk, speed, maturity and play reading ability to match it with most forwards in a similar fashion to Scarlett does now.

Thoughts?

See him more as a replacement for Dasher, versatile, reads the play well but never going to be big enough to play key position.

To be honest, I don't see him as a direct replacement for anyone in particular.

He's playing the Jason Gram-type role off the flank, which is something we never really had to begin with. He'll be able to line-up on (and go head to head with) the odd genuine tall opposition forward, but he's certainly not someone I'd pencil in as a genuine KPP tall for now, or the future. His strength is his attacking game, and until he shows significant inroads with his defensive capabilities, it's hard to imagine why you'd play him in a position that otherwise would not seek to highlight that aspect of his game (ie less defensive, more room to rebound - a KPP demands too much of the former)

He has improved from last years form though (which is a pretty decent move up in itself, all things considered). His kicking is still too mixed (I'd haphazard a guess and pinpoint his kicking action - pretty low%), and his physical pressure/presence in contests is still too far below par (but improving nonetheless - he's committed himself to more contests the past few months than he has over the previous few years since being set up by the Graham hospital ball awhile back), but he's running as hard as anyone we've got down back to provide an option up field, in general play, and ahead of the play.

Perhaps most importantly for him though (at least, in my eyes), he's legitimately established himself as a component of the 22 by merit of what he's producing, rather than what he's only capable of (potential) or by simply being in Bomber's books (as a former 1st Round pick..etc).

I didnt really rate Mackie much but he has really impressed me. Has found a place for himself in the starting 22 and will make it hard for players on the outer eg. Harley, to get bak in!

dont like him in the backline, always lets his man run off and take easy marks. though i do like the run he gives out of the backline, often ends up with him having a long shot at goal. maybe play him as a loose man

That role currently goes to Milburn but I do see Mackie doing that role once dasher retires.

Definitely want him to bulk up a bit and see him as a future replacement for dasher, but that would depend on him being able to not only run off his man, but beat them 1on1. A bit of Dasher's agro would go a long way too.
The dude is way too skinny, but you have to give him respect for the season he has had so far.

He is obviously a late maturer. Milburn was a skinny rake in his early years and I can see Mackie similarly filling out in his mid-20's.

He's good when he's not under pressure, but I think he makes some silly decisions under pressure, as do a lot of others, but he seems to like the 2ft handball a bit too much, often ends up at someones feet.

Not quite Milburn yet
