Athletic forward Maddy Collier has plenty of AFLW experience, having represented the GWS Giants on 15 occasions after making her debut in the opening round of the 2017 season. In April 2019, Collier was signed as a free agent by West Coast and was also named as a member of the inaugural leadership group. Collier played almost every match in the club's first season and continued on this strong form in 2021 to finish in the top five at the Club Champion awards. In June 2021 it was revealed Collier had penned a one-year extension to remain at West Coast after impressing as a midfielder and off half-back.

"When I came to West Coast, I was wanting to play better footy, become a better person and really challenge myself," Collier said.
"To move to other side of country and give it a crack, and I think I have achieved that in a sense, done what I set out to do, made some really good friends and connections in Perth.
"Now I’m returning home, going to start thinking about life after footy a bit more seriously, while being back in a familiar place with friends and family close by.

Sad to say but I fear Maddy Collier will not play again for the Swans.

The latest injury report has her out for the season. She was our inaugural captain and also won best club person award while out injured for the whole season in 2023. However by the completion of 4 seasons on our list she will have played 5 games for the club and she turns 30 in a couple of weeks. Don't think we can justify retaining her as a player any longer.

Maddy has given everything in her time at the club and I'm pretty sure she's a lifelong Swans supporter. Not many athletes get happy endings. 💗

Inaugural Swans co-captain announces retirement

After 10 seasons across three clubs, including 13 games for the Sydney, former co-captain Maddy Collier has announced her retirement....Hailing from the NSW South Coast, Collier first pulled on a Swans guernsey in a women’s exhibition game in 2016. She played six seasons with West Coast and the GWS Giants, before returning to the red and white in 2022...“I’ve supported this club since I was a kid so to pull on the Swans guernsey was a real ‘pinch me moment’, and it was an incredible honour to be named co-captain in the first year,” Collier said.

There are very few of the inaugural squad still around, and they’re dwindling quickly. Will Priv survive the season cull?

Most of the rest are pretty young - headlined by Ally, Cyn, Sofia and Montana. Those aside, I think Ruby and Lexi are the only others. Have I forgotten anyone?

BT & Alice Mitchell.

I would have thought Priv would survive, depending on the reasons for her lack of form. However, Gowans' comment post-Eagles match that he was worried she was "done" a few weeks ago makes me think again. I think we need her. She plays the position in the ground that is our biggest lack (tall forward).

Oops! I had Tarrant on my mental list but forgot to write her down. I hadn’t exactly forgotten about Mitchell but had overlooked (overthought?) her as one of The Originals.

Easy to do with Mitchell because I think she was injured pretty much the whole season.

It's hard to write much of a testimonial to Maddy because we saw so little of her. She only played 5 games in her 4 seasons. However, she was our inaugural captain (together with Brooke Lochland); she took a considerable risk and made some sacrifice to move from an established W team to a start up team; she won best clubwoman (I think in second season) despite being injured all year which speaks to the amount of contribution and leadership she showed off the field. I seem to recall that she grew up a Swans supporter.

It's great that she's got to call time on her own career rather than having that decision made for her (well, we don't know what happened behind the scenes but still).

Even more promisingly, in his presser today, Scott Gowans intimated that she will have an ongoing role at the club going forward so much do we value what she has to offer.
