My father bought some dodgy computer for us less than twelve months ago. It is dodgy coz he wouldn't listen to me adn go to Harvey Norman to buy it instead got it from some backdoor computer place. It is pentium 4 and very fast and all that but now is barely manageable. Windows freeze up constantly and i have to reset it every 10 mins practically and push control alt delete then go end task blah blah blah, msn cuts off all the time, hard to get into the net etc etc. Not to mention the burner is unusable coz it freezes up as well. Oh and the computer is very hard to turn off sometimes it will turn itself on in the nite so we have to turn it off at the switch as it is outta control lol. Wot is wrong with this farken bomb anyone got any suggestions? Most logical one i have heard is because we r not running windows XP on it?????????

Do a fresh install. I usually do one every 3-4 months to keep things running smoothly. I've had the same thing with the computer turning itself on though also, mine does it whenever the phone rings, very strange indeed.

Yep. definitely fresh install - if ya can, get someone who knows what they are doing and who can optimise your system properly.. a lot of programs (and windows itself) install a lot of crap you don't want or need.

If it started off ok, then slowly deteriorated, that's the most likely problem.

I just don't turn my computer off. I know alot of people thinks thats stupid but i've never had any problems with my computer, and its hardly been turned off in the last 6 months.

Spidey,

install Windows XP, its without a doubt the best Windows OS going around - very stable.

Also, P4's dont have the best reputation going around - i remember my programming teacher at school telling me why and it was something to do with intel designing them to go faster then what they actually can or somtehing like that and it burns it out.

sounds fairly spot on hourn the computer does seem to be too fast for itself.

would love to just keep the thing left on yet my father wont even let me do this if i walk away from the computer as he starts screaming that the screen will burn  and about the electricity bill. Also thinks that the computer is farked due to me changing the wallpaper LOL LOL LOL fool

I wouldn't recommend anyone buy a PC from Hardly Normal even if you paid me...there are plenty of reputable computer dealers out there that will give you a far better choice and price than they will...

The reason your computer turns itself on when the phone rings, is it has a "Wake-on" feature enabled.

You can go find it, and turn it off, if you care that much.

The other alternative is to simply unplug the computer's line from your phone socket on the wall.

Be very careful about "borrowing" Windows XP. It has an activation feature and will shut itself off if the correct codes are not given to Big Brother.

Of course there is the odd beta around without the activation feature...but hey if you are really keen to have XP, you could just buy it...in the right place, you can get a copy for less than $200. And if you ask nicely the dealer will even set it up for you!!

Just download a corprate edition of XP they don't need activating
also don't install any of the service packs unless you know wht you are doing
I would recommend staying away from xp
try Me or 2000 just my opinion

ok thanks guys, relos have got windows xp so we will prob grab that off them and install it. Deteriorate is definately the word. U Pay a good 2 - 3000 dollars for these things and the internet just kills it off slowly!

Holy crap! $2-3000! I could get you a state-of-the-art computer, fantastic CPU, graphics card, sound card, motherboard, 60Gb HDD, etc for $1200.

Just go to a swap meet (on every sunday), and you can buy computer parts at almost distributor prices. Just a piece of advice, make sure you take someone along that knows a bit about computers. Not all hardware is compatible with each other.

its not turnin off when the phone rings coz we gotta seperate line it just wont go off when it shuts down and it flicks itself on when i go to bed.

buying xp seems the way to go then instead of borrowing it. My idiot father spent about 300 on a stupid virus checker program which i coulda easily downloaded so for 200 i will see if i can talk him into buying it. Parents r very stubborn tho and insist on copying everything from my stupid relatives which is parta the reason why the computer is stuffed. Used to get a lot of dodgy shareware things off my aunty and they were just a nightmare.

If i have my way and ever get a job i will buy my own laptop!

Actually, stay well clear of WindowsME. Biggest waste of space ever, any system over 128mb ram it can't manage it properly. God nows why, even windows 98se is more stable than WinMe.

If you're getting a newer OS, get 2000 install service pack 3 and everything will be fine. XP is ok. But give it a few more months until they release a service pack for it.

I have two conmputers in my room and when you turn one on, the other one turns on also. Its usually quite convenient.;)

Yeah go with win2000 or XP pofessional. Note home edition or your going to have to download workarounds for the activation...

Do MS still allow magazines to publish that SP on cover CD's? I know the one mag I buy, APC have a SP on this months CD for win2000. I remember with one of the SP's they had trouble getting permission to do it. Saves downloading 40+MB.

I'm not sure what the deal is these days with the SP's on magazine's CD's. I know you can order it directly from Microsoft, don't know if it cost's you anything though, although being MS, it probably does.

It could be overclocked. ie the Shop sold you a P4 1.6GHz PC, but it only has a 1.4 Ghz chip.
Next time you turn it on, go into the bios settings, and reduce the clock frequency by about 20% and see if it makes it any better.

If its waking up when the phone rings, that just means your modem has "wake Up" set. Read the modem instructions for how to unset it.

Personally, I'd always buy from a smaller local shop than someone like Hardly Normal. Usually local shops have people who are pretty technically cluey.
Just get an on-site warantee, and make sure the shop has been around for a few years.

It's called lack of maintenance from uneducated operator's. :p
9 times out of ten the quality of the computer is good, just the operating system goes haywire.
