I'm looking at options for accommodation for next year, when I move to Melbourne for uni. I've had a recommendation to look at the Student Village in Maribyrnong. I'm planning to go to Melbourne Uni next year, so I was just wondering, for any Melbourne people, how long would it take by public transport (I won't have a car) to get to Melbourne Uni, and also the city? I don't want to be spending forever every day to get to uni.

Any other recommendations for accomodation not far from Melbourne Uni would be appreciated also. ;)

I would recommend staying at one of the Melbourne Uni colleges. Can't get any closer to Uni and is also great from a social point of view. Downside is that it is expensive but if you can afford it, I think it is the best way to go.

i think the student accodimation at Mariburnong is for VUT students only. I am not too sure about that. I am only guessing as I went to VUT and they alwasy said it was there student village.

The student village has decent public transport, but the tram going past Melbourne Uni is about a 10 minute walk away, and a 40-45 minute tram ride to Parkville. Only single carriage trams too, so they get very crowded during peak times because they service an area with growing density.

Other trams and buses go within 300 metres of the student village, and to get to Melbourne Uni you'd have to connect to a train or bus in Footscray. Not sure about non-VUT students being able to stay there, so you'd best check that out.

The western and north-western suburbs aren't too expensive though, so it might also be worth looking into some shared accomodation which is close to public transport that connects with Melbourne Uni and the CBD.

Yeah, I'll certainly apply, but it's definitely a lot of money. Not sure we can afford that, as my sister is also going away to boarding school next year. The student village is only about $3700 a year, or $101 a week. On the other hand, I think the cheapest of those colleges is about $10,000 a year. It's not fair of me to expect my parents to pay that.

The friend who recommended me informed me that it was for any uni student, and I checked out the website, and it's open to all university students. The people who stay there are mainly from the inner/western unis, eg VUT, Melb, RMIT.

The student village at Maribyrnong also has free entertainment like out of control Carlton players spraying fire estinguishers at 3am as well.

Some of my friends from VUT stayed there and said that it was OK for the price they paid. There is a bus right outside and the tram to Footscray is not far away either. Highpoint is around the corner and Footscray and Moonee Ponds and Essendon are close by.
