Any track watchers have comments on his progress? I've read everything from worst recruit ever (really) to some nice work in the intra-practice game today. Cheers.

Trains without any fanfare, and goes almost un-noticed the majority of the time. From some of the training I saw just after Christmas, he turn the ball over a fair bit, although this could have just been blowing the cobwebs out.

Does look to have some promise, and another year of development with the Bullants should see him become a regular senior player in 2009.

Not WH style at all, he would have drafted him because he thought he was the best player available at #35.....IIRC we rated him in or just outside our top 20.:thumbsu:

God i'm going to hate saying this, but I agree. Not a chance that WH, or the club for that matter, would have drafted Austin just to apease Gibbs.

Jesus, what does it take for these young blokes to realize this is the big time? All the hard work, the training and gym, the draft and then finally getting to a club at the highest level. To hear they are lacking "intensity" after all the sacrifice and effort makes me want to throw the cat at the telly.
Mark Waugh "lacked intensity" yet his brother was one of most intense sportmen of all time........both greats.

Hird on the exterior lacked intensity.

I hope this is a caase of looks being deceiving, and, to some degree, just being a young guy who hasn't quite switched 100% into the midset of an elite footballer.

Sometimes I think we expect too much of these kids.........and they are just kids still.

Having said that it's a dog-eat-dog game and he needs to start showing some footy ability this year and put himself on the fringe of the best 22.
Looked a very good player from what i saw at the Ants last year.

i think he should be developed as a tall mobile CHF as we have enough developing backmen in the form of jamison setanta waite and thornotn is still qite young and there are a few more who can play back

True enough although Hird and Waugh were both silk. Do you think JH was quite as laconic in his first couple of seasons though?

I don't think for one minute that Austin is the quality of these guys, and on that fron my post might have been a little misleading.

My point was more that some guys don't have to look like they are busting a gut to get the best out of themselves........Austin MAY be one of these types.

Whether he has the ability to back it up onfield is yet to be seen.

FWIW IMO JH was more gangly and "looked" unco than Laconic early days.

He's got a laconic style, but anyone who saw the job he did on Gumby in the Ants vs Bendigo game would be positive about his future.
Glad I saw this post. :thumbsu: :)
He has the biggest thighs at the club along with Shields but still needs to develop his upper body strength
You were right and I was wrong. :thumbsu:

Oz is in good nick for a 19 year old and alot bigger than Livingston or Norman at 19.

And a more exciting and talented footballer IMO.

How many games from Austin would make you happy or unhappy with his development?

I'd be ecstatic if Oz played 10 games and lapped Bower for a spot in our best 22, but I would feel a tad disappointed if he only played five games at the most in 2008. Austin is a year younger than Livingston was in 2002, but even Luke didn't show as much as Austin has in the VFL, yet Livo managed to play 17 games in his second season. Austin playing five to 10 games would be a great stepping stone to securing a spot at CHB and playing 15 to 20 games in 2009.

Or do you think the club will ease him into senior footy and take a softly, softly approach with Austin?

I wouldn't want to see another example of a coach throwing a player like Livingston into the deep end before his mind, game and body were ready for such a task.

TG I reckon its definately going to be softly softly.
He was bottom age and still needs to add bulk upper body.
Hos foot skills still need improving.

With the teams goal of trying to make the 8 and I think we will not see much blooding of youngsters aho arent ready.

He has Thornton Waite Jammo and Bower and Setanta ahead of him as tall backs.

Fish, Kreuz ,Cloke,Fev, Jake and possibly even a resting Hammer or Aisake to compete with for a tall spot up forward.

Definately will be a development year for Mark and he will be lucky to get 2-3 games IMO ( this dosnt mean he wont turn out any good.

Damned straight, and I dont think that Ratts is going to be doing that... he has played the modern game and knows the intensity of it... unlike a certain former Carlton coach who got in one of his booty boys after that player was dropped by North, got him to his 300 games and then let him retire without an arguement.

Cue Livo and being him smashed from pillar to post as a too young KPP without an experienced defender to look after him :(
