For someone who hasn't been used to how we play, in terms of structure, in defense, he came in and did a solid job. Outmarked and spoiled his opponents on numerous occasions. For all this negativity, there were a few positives. Hopefully He can hold down the 3rd tall spot in defense, and with him, Bower and Jamison, that leaves Thornton as the loose man, allowing us to send Waite up forward. That would give us some unpredictability and a bit more x-factor, especially if Yarran starts delivering consistently on his talent.

Thoughts?

yeah i thought wasnt to bad considering how long he hasnt been in the first team... didnt the ants have him in the forward line a few weeks back and kicked a few goals ? it would be great if we could use him up forward... lovely size on him and seems like a good mark...

Agree, good post.

I am so glad Ozzie is coming through - absolute perfect timing.
Waite should be our permanent CHF and with Oz coming thru, it will allow Match Committee to commit Waite to CHF.

3 goals in one quarter, Waite is wasted down back (depends who we play. i.e. Reiwoldt? Richo? etc)

Austin has big shoes to fill though, so we'll see Waite down back holding down the Reiwoldt types when need be.

Well done Austin, I'm sure he will keep his spot this week, he was above servicable.

Either way, if Aussie can keep playing the way he is, he and waite can regularly swap with each other where one goes forward, the other goes back. Imagine that, two swinging backmen! After saturday night, we know Aussie can take a contested grab, and that waitey can be damaging in short stints. If Aussie can kick em like he has in the Ants, then we'll have plenty of depth and that genuine sense of unpredictability in our forwardline that we've lacked for so bloody long! Just makes you wonder if Aussie could be our most valuable player in the long run?

Like Oz a lot. This type of thread usually comes around on the Wednesday after a loss. If we are healing 2 days quicker that's a positive. :thumbsu:

These threads are around on Mondays. Its just hard to spot them in the flood of abusive threads and 'personal thoughts'.

My guess is that you're good at Where's Wallys?

You bet! Found him straight away in the goal-square Satty night.

Good post and agreed.

Couldn't understand all the crap that was being posted about this kid over the weekend.

The young guys deserve a fair go.....supporters can't expect these young guys to come in and be immediate match winners.

Hate to be a nuisance but missed the game on Sat night.

Can someone give me a brief summary of what he got up to, what pozzie played etc etc.

Interested about this bloke and someone I hope will develop into a nice afl player.

Cheers

he started forward but wasnt very effective as he wasnt getting much opportunity from the mids.
In the second Ratten moved Waite forward to give the team a spark and switched Austin down back. Im not sure who his direct opponent in the backline was, but he went in 3rd man up on a few occassions, used his body well to beat opponents one on one, and i remember one play where he spoiled pavlich
he has got good size, and we must continue to give these players games!

It was a very promising performance. He looked very comfortable and clean and classy. With that territory that he covered and his clean hands I would really like to see him play the lead-up CHF for a while. Surely he can be no less effective than Cloke atm. The trio (Yarran, Hampson, Austin) all put in promising performances I felt.

Fair assessment. All 3 didn't have a sgnificant impact on the match, yet showed enough signs for them to be persisted with for the time being. Would really like to see them grasp this opportunity with both hands.

And the key there Sublime - is persisted with....not given a game here and there and expected to perform miracles in short bursts.

Maybe I am completely out of my mind but my rationale says at best if we are lucky we could make the eight this season. We are no chance in the world of winning the premiership this season, so why not give some of these kids like Austin whom we have had on our list for a couple of seasons a fair go and see what they can do over the next 15 rounds.

I was at the game on Sat night and he took one nice mark, but other than that thought he looked a bit out of his league. A few fumbles and seemed to lack awareness. But as other posters have said they should persist and give him time to pick up the pace of AFL and then we'll know whether the kid has a big future or not.

Really? I didn't pick up on the fumbles by him on TV (the rest of the team had a terrible case of it though). I actually thought he was really clean, and the one pick-up was, dare I say it, Yarran-like!

Interesting how you get different perspective's when at the game vs TV. I, for one, hate watching it on TV. I need to be at the game so that I can view the entire ground.

Have to admit, my first impression on the night was he was pretty clean given the rest of the side's handling.

Really showed some good signs on Saturday night did Aussie. Clean above his head, and moved really well. Looked pretty good at both ends of the ground also. Really highlights for me why we need to be patient with these young talls - Paul Bower is another example of this.

Psst, you should let Thy know the talls take longer to come on ;)
