It would be interesting to know what other Geelong supporters thought of Jacko as a Geelong player -i thought he was Ok

Obviously he wasnt anywhere near the class of players such as Mooney , Hawkins and Stoneham but i think he was superior as a forward to players such as Mensch, Handley, Spinks, Mitchell White, Middlemiss and P Johnson

Devine hated him and got rid of him -but Devine was a disaster with his Allen Killigrew impersonations

I can remember Jacko kicked a couple of big bags -one was out at Carlton which was a pretty good effort -like he averaged 3 and half goals a game -thats not bad -and he played in a pretty ordinary Geelong team . Like Nathan Ablett was no great shakes as a player -i think Jacko would have kicked plenty if he had played in 2007 GF - I suppose anyone would have .

Jacko copped a bit of flack for that game against Hawthorn at Princess Park -but i thought he was only standing up to players like Ayres Langford Deperdeminico who dished plenty out -and he certainly didnt break any 5 foot 9 inch Rovers Jaw with a King Hit.

So in summary -i thought Jacko was a reasonable player for Geelong

I totally agree, in fact I'd go further. Jacko was a genuinely talented player. In terms of those players you listed, he was more talented and, arguably, better performed than moons, and has far more runs on the board than Hawkins or even stoneham, although both those guys are/were more skillful and, I guess, talented than he was.

Pretty much a star back then, which is no less significant than being a star is today.

Beer cans & handstands!!
Loved his antics, was ahead of his time as an entertainer.

As for footy loved it when he keeped his head talented & strong, i
bet the opposition fullbacks hated playing on him for all the right reasons

Though he was a w***er and would much rather forget he played for us.

Really dumb dumb recruit regardless of how "talented" he was he was a poor image for the cats IMHO.

Again what a w***er

Too young to see him play but he must have been one hell of a frittata to get booted from all those clubs when he averaged 3.75 goals a game!

He was the Fev of his generation, really. Had genuine ability but the antics often overshadowed the output. That he shopped himself around to play for... 4? clubs was a fair indication of his hot potato status at the time.

Fev come across as a much smarter guy that that tool.

The bad outweighed the good. He once bitched about not being passed the ball at Melbourne. You have to be really disliked for that to happen when you are full forward. He tried some bully boy antics on the training track at Richmond and Bartlett flattened him. Not loved there, either. I remember hearing stories at the time of some of his antics.

Every bit as good as Fev. I saw him slot one through from 50 on the boundary at Princes Park and Jacko was a dead eye dick shot at goal. His antics were a distraction, unfortunately Jackson was already thinking of his post VFL career before he actually finished playing, but at the time Geelong were broke and in desperate need of a forward. The club was in poor shape in the mid 80's and then were hit hard by the Hafey treachery who decided to decimate the Geelong list by poaching players to the Swans! Jackson kicked 115 goals for Geelong 31 matches and that ain't bad.

He was ahead of his time in some ways. He played football as a purely commercial venture and made no bones about it. No doubt it rubbed some people up the wrong way. He didn't partake of the footy culture - never drank - and didn't go out of his way to befriend teammates. So no surprise he wasn't everyone's favourite.

But he could play. You don't kick that many goals unless you have some ability. And he played at mostly crap clubs too.

He was definitely, without being a star, a very good and efficient full forward.
But you are seriously understating the case with the bolded statements.
At South Freo, despite a successful season, his team-mates voted him out of the SF team.
He left Melbourne after 2 successful seasons because he felt that he didn't have the support of the coaches or players.
He was sacked from StK for disciplinary reasons after kicking 41 in 10 matches.
He was dropped at Geelong after kicking 6 in Rd1 and 2 in Rd2 in 1986, then retired.
This all seems to show that he actively antagonised team-mates, rather than just not befriending them.

Yeah he was a difficult character, and boy what a character. The only comparison with Fev was that they were both really talented. Fev had his off-field issues, whilst Jacko's were all on-field. Jacko knew he was an entertainer first and a footballer second. When Devine dropped him in 86 he knew his career path lay elsewhere and he grabbed it with both hands.

He was still a bloody decent footballer though, tactically very astute. He knew what his strengths and weaknesses were and played his game accordingly.

He still holds the record for the most number of consecutive games from debut with at least one goal in every match. And he did that in teams that were not top sides.

I admire the guy, in part for his football ability, in part because he added colour and in part because he made the most of his opportunities and in part because he really did prepare himself well for all aspects of his life.

Yeah I think it was more when Devine showed up he suddenly had two full forwards at his disposal (with Brownless being drafted), and Jackson didn't have a hope of playing anywhere else. So he quit. Shame, as we really could have used him that season, and he may even have been handy by the time Blight arrived.

It wasn't unique to Geelong though. Look at Richmond with Roach and Taylor, that cost them a certain premiership because no one in footy had the smarts to make it work. Thankfully clubs and coaches are far better at those things now.

He summed up the Geelong FC of my youth. A talented disaster.

At least you had the talented bit.
My youth involved, among other things, travelling to and from Melbourne to Geelong in Dad's ute every 2nd Saturday to watch them win back to back Wooden Spoons in 1957/58.
The only saving grace was watching the brilliant Freddie Le Deux.

I think I could have coped with plain old stinking up the joint. A childhood of constant hope being cruelly crushed resulted in me saying at 1/2 time in the 07 GF, "they can still come back" whilst holding a pillow over my face.

I remember first seeing him playing seconds for Richmond, and he was already doing all the antics. For all his football talent, his disruptive behaviour negated his benefit to the team.

Although he was dead set useless if he wasn't getting near the ball I didn't mind him until he took us for a training session at North Shore.
A moron of the highest order.

Good call , you can't teach " douchebag" , it tends to be natural.
Having said that he kicked a few bags on us in the 2's which is probably why we went with him , wouldn't pass muster in this era of due diligence and the no DH policy.

F2G, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Stopped watching the game and just watched him.

From memory Roach was still FF for the tiges at the time, slightly different approach to the game ...

The memory of him is a little hazy but I remember him being a better than average shot for goal and as strong as an ox in an era when you could wrestle and hold. As for the headstands and strutting around - totally agree , astounding stuff !!

Friggen hell! I thought that I was old but Fred is a genuine living fossil.
