This guy is my favorite player outside the Eagles. Mature head on his shoulders and a player that plays footy with the passion and courage. He reminds me of a young Ben Cousins in the way he moves (the footy version and not the party version) and he is probably a better kick.

It is fair to say however that today was not one of his best games and he had a bit of a shocker. What I would be interested in hearing is your views on Pagan playing him on Judd in the first quarter?

I know that it is a fantastic learning opportunity for the kid however I think that it shook him up pretty badly, and he seemed to have lost some confidence during the game, hence he missed number of relatively easy shots at goal.

I found the match up odd given how he solidly outplayed Stenglein the last time we played and would have thought Carlton would have been better off playing him in a creative role. I thought that Walker would have been a better match up on Judd (given that he is slightly further in his development) and would be a far better match up for pace and explosiveness? Walker too could benefit by playing on Judd and could learn what it takes to be an astounding midfielder and not just a very good one.

i agree, why play murphy (our best fit midfielder) on judd, he is such a positive and courageous player, his role should be to create not negate.

Last time we played you there was no Judd.

And i think pagan thought why not play our up and coming midfielder on the best player in the comp, so he can learn from it.

Now it may seem like a bad move but murph has probably learnt a hell of a lot from this game

Agree. Murphy playing on Judd was an extemely dumb coaching move. Walker should have played on him the whole game.

did he not play in that game at subi last year?

Overrated dud.

Nowhere near as good as Marc Murphy. ;)

Thank you for adding value...

English is my second language and always thought that spelling is way too overrated given that spell check exists. However in this case it is kind of disrespectful not to know (or be callous) how to spell the players name. (Mod fee free to change the title - thanks)

Re: Marc Murphy

Was a silly move. Dumb. Best-ball winner of ours tagging their best player... tsk tsk

Wish he'd kicked those goals though

Outstanding post :) agree 100%
Murph does not have the speed to go with Judd, he needs to be creative.
Walker is the perfect match up and when Walks went into the midfield in the last quater he got allot of the ball himself and allot of clearances...
Go 1AW

Murph on Judd was trying to break the Selwood tag.

Two ways AFL coaches try to break tags.
Go forward and expose the tagger for lack of height (they are usually dwarfs who are ugly little mutants (nop offense to our caterpillar in Russ......he will be a beautiful butterfly one day)

second way is to get the tagged player to run with another mid and tag, hoping to congest the space and have your guy take two of theirs out of the picture.......hence Stevens tagging Kerr last year.

Didn't work, but it was innovative.

Murphs goal kicking has been off since the NAB cup. missed a sitter (by his standards) last week vs Bombers, and missed two today. Very disappointing.

Murphy on Judd was a great move by Pagan. What better way to learn when you're playing on the best. Would have been a great experience on Murphy.

This move crucified the team, as did Gibbs on Kerr.

Inspiration courtesy of Steven Baker :D

Would have learnt a great deal in that 1 quarter, just as Gibbs said he did having a run on Hird. Murph should learn from the experience and become a better player.
I do not think this in any way influenced the outcome of the game, therefore a good move for Murph and Carlton's future development.

With the loss of Stevens, poor Murph is going to cop the premier tag each week, he'll naturally struggle for a while but he will also get 2 years worth of education in a year.

Sherman is copping the same treatment this year and he is struggling at the moment. Be patient and they will come out the other end even better than before.

It seemed his instructions were to tag Judd, if so that was stupid.

I would've had no problems for them to go head to head & let Murphy play his normal game.

We were always going to get beaten... might as well give Murphy, Gibbs, Russell, Walker et al, exposure to the games best players and set the challenge that this is where they should be aiming.

Good long term decision for them to go head to head with Judd, Kerr etc.
