No doubt McLeod was good but when you stack him up against the great man....well, it's a no brainer.
How apt it is that he's up this week given the pain he inflicted on the Cats, they cringed when ever he was near the ball.

Yeah pretty close - I reckon people are voting for Macleod because he played 300+ games.

Both champions though.

Margin is getting closer to 50-50. Keep voting on as many platforms as possible to get the rightful 50-50 position.

Mcleod was a great player with great longevity but for the second half of his career was average. In saying that the last few years of matera wasn't spectacular either. Matera's peak for my mind was greater and very, very unlucky not to win the brownlow at the very least once and probably twice.

Not sure if they don't have much footage of Matera or Geelong were just his absolute bunnies haha
That '92 GF was pretty nuts though, 60m goals on the run - boom!

Some of those highlights were freaking incredible, haven't watched many highlights of his for a while - Judd is very similar to him.

It looks like past "who comes out on top" competitions have been for only the top echelon of players, great to see Roo being recognised by the media this year - top 10 in Sheahans best players of the past 20 years too.

I guess this is the appropriate place to put this. Not sure if any of you have read Matera's book, waltzing matera, but I read it a while ago, and this thread just made me remember it again.

It had a few weird bits in it, things that were completley wrong:confused: Like when he's talking about the 94 GF. He talks about the game, that's all fine, but then he says something like, I played ok, kicked a couple of goals, he kicked no goals in the 94 GF. Then he goes on to to talk about feeling sorry for Mitchell White, having missed the 94 GF, and he hopes one day he gets to play in a grand final:drunk: He played in the 92 flag, with Roo, what the f**k is he on about??

Now I'm not 100% sure who wrote the book, I'd have to dig it out and have a look, but majority of it "seems" to be straight from Peter's mouth. How could he get that stuff wrong, and how could someone proof reading before it went to print, not pick those things out?? It was written in 1996, so not like it was 10 or 20 years after the 94 flag that he got some things mixed up.

I just keep remembering it any time someone mentions Matera, and keep meaning to bring it up in here and see if anyone else has read the book and noticed it.

didnt know roo ever released a book, will have to check that out

as for matera vs mcleod, it's no contest. matera was WAY more consistent throughout his career, barely played a bad game in his career.

that video is joke as well, so many matera highlights and the only ones that ever get pulled out are the 92 GF goals (as great as they were...)

It's a pretty close comparison, if I take my Eagles hat off - perhaps the two Norm Smith's, longevity, MVP and captaincy tilt it in Mcleod's favour. Matera was probably the better, more consistent player, but body of work gets Mcleod over the line. Of course I still voted for Roo.

I think the more important takeaway from all of this, is just how terrible Fremantle's recruiting department managed to be for over 10 years. It's outstanding really.

materas last couple of years werent all that flash tbh - opponents had figured out that if you got under his skin hed crack the shits and play ordinary footy and give away silly free kicks

matera was still a GUN in last couple of years, playing off half back. if anything, he retired too early.
