Stats history: Matthew Boyd (AFL Tables)

The retirement of captain and club champion Brad Johnson in 2010 left big shoes to fill. Matthew Boyd inherited the captaincy and despite a difficult season for the club, he proved he was up to the task, playing every game and leading the AFL in disposals (701), contested ball (326) and clearances (154). He polled 24 Brownlow votes to finish equal third. Leading the Bulldogs in kicks (398) and coming second to Ryan Griffen for inside 50's (115) and goal assists (23), Boyd was duly awarded his second Charles Sutton medal (previously winning in 2009).

His best game was probably the round 22 demolition of Port Adelaide where he collected 39 disposals and booted 3 first half goals. Other notable games were against Fremantle (45 possessions in a close defeat) and West Coast (40 possessions in another close defeat). His consistency is shown by having under 25 disposals in just 3 games, with a low of 22 vs Adelaide.

Sometimes criticised for his disposal by foot (62% DE - admittedly less than his peers), Boyd's ability to keep winning the ball makes him a vital cog in the Bulldogs' midfield.

Congrats to Matt on reaching 200 games this week.
He has been relentless in getting the best out of himself for the last 10 years and is a fantastic role model for younger players.

We've all had a knock on him for his disposal at times but we would be much worse off without him. Great courage, preparation and commitment. Also a very fair and understated player. He came as a rookie in 2002 and has now played 200 games, is a dual AA, club captain and won two Charlie Sutton B&F medals.

Hope he plays a blinder against the Hawks and we can claim an upset victory for him!

Yesterday yet again thE MUPPET fox footy commentator reffered to Mathew as Brad Boyd surely our captain and club deserves a bit more respect than that.To top it off the same dill later called Jarrad Grant Jason Gram. Then this morning on SEN Brendan McCartney was reffered to as Brenton Sanderson. Yeah it's pretty poor. And they call themselves professional commentators. Boyd has been copping it his whole career

Reflective of lack of professionalism in the Australian media generally. Another example was some Channel 9 punk interviewing Kobe Bryant in front of international media and asking a question about Stephanie Rice. What a joke.

It would be easier all round if Matt just changed his name to Brad.
If those ignorant self-inflated TV commentators haven't got it right after 10 years there's not much chance of them changing now.

Heard that gaffe at the start of the broadcast, but noted it was done by a non-regular commentator who I had never seen commentating before (forget his name - not an ex player)

I think some regular commentators are over at the London Olympics so perhaps some Rookies are filling in.

Don't think there are too many good Tv commentators really
McAvaney
Cometti
Hudson
Tim Lane

Are the only good ones that come to mind , all others are pretty ordinary to be honest . Always thought Brian Taylor was good - he was on radio, but on TV you see all the mistakes he makes - and there are plenty !
Dwayne Russell is one who I think is an absolute shocker - how he has remained employed mystifies me -must have photos of someone at Fox - Channel 9 even - I heard him commentating at the Olympics last night .
Channel 7 or Fox need to recruit some new blood .
Matt Granlan on SEN is pretty good - there must be more out there .
Speaking of photos - Glen Jackovich must have plenty . He is terrible as has never looked like getting better

Totally agree with the OP - I heard it too, and thought it was pretty ordinary.

As for commentators, Foxtel should give you a couple of different commentary options each game, as part of their coverage (i.e. you push the red button to choose between 3 commentary teams).

They'd soon work out who the crap commentators are.
  • Sick of McAvaney - so 90s.
  • Sick of Commetti - so early 00s
  • Never liked Tim Lane
  • Don't hate Anthony Hudson, but aren't a wrap for him either

Or should I say, Brazil Templace

Oh yes. He's an absolute bloody shocker. Makes me cringe whenever he opens his mouth. And I dunno if I imagine it but I don't think he likes us.

Kobe has been a regular at Australia's training sessions in London. Also watched the swimming finals yesterday.

Not such a silly question.

Darcy isn't bad...
This will prob go down not so awesome, but matty lloyd is growing on me. He's the only one with balls to say his opinion and at least back it up when commentating.
Andy Maher or however its spelled, i can't stand..had a run with him last year after I told him his overrated red sox were exactly that

I don't think he's questioning the validity of the question I think he's questioning the relevance of it.

Fair enough but it is unusual that Kobe Bryant would take an interest in the Australian swim team. The demographic difference between basketball and swimming is probably greater than any two other major sports, swimming being dominated by whites with barely any black participation at that level.

No, it is a silly question. I'd rather hear about basketball. The world media would rather hear about basketball. But here we had a cadet hack asking Kobe bloody Bryant about Stephanie Rice. F" me, leave that crap to New Idea after the Olympics have finished.

Yeah, Kobe really doesn't get asked enough questions about basketball. I barely associate him with basketball anymore, every time I see Kobe all I can think about is swimming and Stephanie Rice.

The "Brad Boyd" thread should not have been merged into this. The thread was about journalism standards, not about the player.

Agree about Lloyd, if anything he can be too opinionated, but he does call a spade a spade :thumbsu:

Don't really rate Darcy, but at least he can get player's names right

Matthew Boyd picked up from where he left off last year, playing every game and enhancing his reputation as one of the AFL's top ball magnets, leading the competition in disposals (721) and coming third in kicks (374 - behind Dane Swan and Gary Ablett).

He led the Bulldogs in contested ball (308), clearances (139), while coming second in marks (112), tackles (87) and inside 50’s (98). His consistency was notable, with at least 25 disposals in every game except two. He only polled 10 Brownlow votes, clearly disadvantaged by playing in a struggling team. No one was surprised when he took out his third Charles Sutton medal in four years, arguably bettering his 2011 season.

Notable games:

R2 vs. Adelaide: 28 disposals, consecutive goals in the 3rd quarter dragging the Bulldogs back into the game.

R7 vs. North Melbourne: 44 disposals in an upset 18 point win.

R16 vs. Hawthorn: 37 disposals in his 200th game, sadly the Bulldogs are crushed.

R22 vs. Geelong: 46 disposals at 80% efficiency against the reigning premier.

In 2013, Boyd will add valuable leadership and experience to the young Bulldogs midfield, as the team looks to the future.

Don't get me wrong, I love what Matty Boyd embodies. Mental toughness, the ability to overcome great odds, strength at the contest, etc, etc.

He has even made the AA team in the past, based off his ability to find the ball.

But...

His brilliant ability to find the ball is actually our biggest weakness.

Not sure what the 'official' stats were, but I can tell you from counting, that 5 of his kicks in the nab Cup game vs Essendon were not just to a contest... but clearly to our disadvantage. And that is just what I counted!

Match ends, and Boyd has 17 disposals, 4 more than anyone else on the ground.

Full kudos to his ability to find the ball, but with Boyd getting so much footy and having such poor disposal by foot (particularly when he is making decisions on the run, not so much when he goes back after marking), how much of an effect is this having on the team? What is worse, is how much of the ball he gets, as a % of our midfield ball anyway...

Don't get me wrong, we would have been done by the Bombers anyway. Not disputing. But nonetheless, of Boyd's 5 poor kicks that I counted, 2 resulted in Essendon goals, and at least 2 cost us decent scoring opportunities.

Funny how there is a perception that Crossy should retire soon, but I don't recall him being so wasteful with the pill.

I don't wish badly upon anyone, but I would love to see how our midfield and forward-line travels this season, if Boyd misses a few games.

I reckon we will find our younger mids are significantly better users (of the ball - no pun intended!) and that our young forwards are just that bit better when they don't have to win 30-70 contests all the time...
