Injury Matthew Scarlett - hamstring strain

By who?

He's only 30, still seems to have the passion and is contracted until the end of 2011.
I'd be absolutely shocked if there was any substance to that claim.

Ditto. Assuming his body holds up (he's been extremely durable despite his two injuries this season) I see Scarlett playing to Dustin Fletcher's age.

Probably not against the Dees' but definitely could be a matchup for Le Cras next week.... With Kennedy, Lynch and Le Cras, that would be my tip.

Mackie can slot into full back as well, but obviously he is more preferable on the flanks.

I wouldn't stress...I would say one of Gillies or Drum are a dead cert to at least travel next week, and will definitely get a game if Harry can't play. This week we've already got enough tall defenders and Melbourne don't have a particularly tall forward line, so selection makes sense in this case. And also, as others have said, Hogan has done nothing wrong.

its funny in the herald sun our "full strength indicator" was at 97%, obviously corey, ottens, rooke and scarlett are only worth 3%. was too busy reading the back page article on josh fraser and missed the 2 line sentence on scarlett about his injury.

Scarlett, Corey, Ottens and Rooke would make up at least 70% FSI on most other teams!!! Can't believe that result????

Oh well, I guess it is almost getting to the point where Rooke is no longer an automatic inclusion, even Corey might have his work cut out in the future....shock horror.

Getting wins on the board over the next 3 games is just so important for us...if we can go to the break without dropping another game and have all 4 names back for selection we will be in a very commanding position!

It's been said Scarlett had to be talked into playing this season. Body gone? Still our MOST important player, just ahead of Mooney, IMO. Could not win a flag without Scarlett. As key for us as Riewoldt for Saints?

Your really good at making outlandish comments.

St Kilda are an absolute rabble without Riewoldt. With the exception of the Dockers game, they haven't played a good game since he has been injured. We've won plenty of games without Scarlett, this year and the previous ones. Granted he is important and we are alot better with him in the side, but with the good form of Taylor and Lonergan I believe we could win a Flag without him, depending on who we played.

And look at the games we have lost without him: Carlton and Dockers. We still would have lost against Carlton regardless of whether he played, purely because that day we lost the midfield battle as well as couldn't contain their small forwards. Scarlett wouldnt have helped much. If anything, the difference may have been 15 - 20 points. As for Dockers, Ottens and Mooney being out that game hurt us as much as Scarlett.

And I would like to know who were these people who said Scarlett almost retired. Considering prior to this year he was barely getting injured thats quite a big statement. If I recall, there was something similiar at the end of 07' regarding Mooney and how battered his body was.

Duskfire, if scarlo missed a finals series we wouldn't win the flag.
The back half completely transforms when he is in.

We could do it without a lot of players including otto or Gaz, but not without scarlo.

Scarlo is as tough as they come. I find it very hard to believe he had to be convinced to go around again this year. Harry and Lonners have come on in leaps and bounds this season. Mackie can play small or tall and we still have Dasher and Boris who can command the backline like their old mate. If sh*t hits the fan move Kel back to defence Let Scarlo have few weeks off and we will still be a force to be reckoned with....but when Scarlo is back...we become the machine!

Edited for accuracy.

I figure the 2007 PF entitles me to.

l reckon Scarlo has clearly emerged as the one we can;t lose.

Otto and Moons are vital structurally, but Blake and Pods (with Hawkins) of late have improved us significantly here. Don't think we would win without them either but Scarlo is completely irreplaceable down there. He beats his man, he helps other blokes beat their man and our entire defence is run by him/built around him. He has gotten to that level where his mere presence makes a sizeable difference to us and our opponents.

Spot on. The other player we would miss is Ling.

Well, lets just say I disagree. I am not arguing that he is one of our most important, but we could beat most teams without him. Someone like Brisbane and a fit St Kilda, yes we would probably lose. But for instance Dockers, Collingwood, Bulldogs etc etc I can definetly see us winning against without Scarlett.

Maybe I am overly optimistic, but I have the belief that the team would find a way. If it turned out Scarlett was going out to be out for long periods of time, Bomber and Co would work out something to plug in the hole at least temporarily. But maybe I am just naive :P

In any case, hopefully we never have to find out.

What rubbish how weak do some of you think we are if any of Scarlett, Ottens, Mooney or Ablett are missing we cant win a flag?

I think this is our best year yet for being able to cover injuries. Here is who I think are our most important players of the last few years.

Scarlett - The only player I believe whoes omission would take away our premiership favouritism.

Mooney - Important for structure but I think we can handle his loss far better this year with Pods and Hawkins.

Ottens - Used to be up there with Scarlett but his loss is not the same anymore Blake has improved and Hawkins is proving ample backup, Ruck is no longer a weakness without him this year.

Ablett - We still have a great midfield without him, a bit of slack picked up accross the other midfielders should lessen the pain of his loss

Taylor - He was right up there last year for importance but Lonergans improvement means we have cover now.

anyone else heard the rumour about a fractured backbone?
Sustained in that fall against Hawks? No, haven't heard that, but that could take Ottens time to heal.
