Now i havnt been able to watch much of the SANFL since i moved from Adelaide last year but on the occasions i get it on foxtel i will watch the eagles play. Now last year when i watched alot of the games on tv there was one player that stood out for me and that was Matty Stokes (wears the number 2 for the eagles) . I honestly think that the Crows should consider picking him up next year because from what i have seen he is very impressive, he has pace, hes a good tackler, goes in hard at the ball, and he is very dangerous around the goals and i think hes the type of player who wont be like Roo or a Goody but would be like the Farmer/Medhurst type which is what they need. I think every team should have a player that shows a pit of flair, the Birdman in his first couple years was a highlight but has since faded as far as flair goes . Just wanna get peoples thoughts on him as a player and if its something the crows can or should look at.

Terrific little player, which is probably the problem for him to be drafted. Will probably be considered to be too small.

Very good player though.

Yet we drafted Skipworth who is slower...

The wonders of our recruiting team.

Agreed - a great footy brain - let down by a body deficient in vital athleticism :(

JUST MAYBE i take it your not a big fan of skippy. I have said this before on a thread where people gave him ******** for bein slow, you dont need pace to be good. Ill name a few that you would appreciate that were not the quickest.
Andrew and Darren Jarmen- they were slower than Sydneys scoring rate
Greg Williams- how many brownlows did he win again? TWO and hes another slow one
The point is you dont need pace to be a gun you need a footy brain. A saying used in footy is used it goes "the game is played 90% mental and 10% physical". To be a good player you need the brain not only pace the slowest players can easily get around the fastests. and i know i have been on the end of underestimating the slower players when i play footy.

For starters the players you mentioned had more footy ability in their little toe than Skipworth has in his entire body.

Skippy is a solid player but he is not that good. He has some serious flaws. He is too short, too slight, too slow for a player of his size, can't kick over 40 meters, disposal can be questionable. The little fella has a HUGE heart but sometimes heart is not enough.

On Stokes, he has the ability but once again he won't get selected simply because he is 170 cm and for that size, he DOESN"T have enough pace. If he was 180 cm, he would be playing AFL already.

One trick a lot of people fall into is thinking how come player X was short, fat and slow but could still play and now player Y won't get drafted because he is short, fat and slow. That argument might have a point but only if you take into account that the game has gotten more athletic, faster and harder than ever before. Has Andrew Jarman ever run 20Km in a single game?????? In today's day and age pace is pretty important. Yes you want a player that can play first and foremost but he has to be athletic enough to be able to play at AFL level these days. As far as atheltic ability is concerned the bar has risen since the good old days.

Different level of players here Chops.

Andrew Jarman - quickest brain I have seen - and very quick hands
Darren Jarman - for his height one of the best marks and best kicks 50mtrs + on either side
Greg Williams - super agressive and again super quick hands inside

Skippy does not have one of those physical skills mentioned - he is a smart footballer but I disagree that its 90% mental - otherwise why would players retire when they're at their smartest (in footy terms)
