:thumbsu:FAR better footballer than most on here give him credit for. Simply put, he gets to more contests than most due to his pace.
A perfect example was against the Lions a few weeks back. Farmer I think it was kicked into space and White sprinted after it and took a mark and ended up goaling. No one else in the team would have got within five metres of the ball but White put in the hard yards.
The guy is growing in confidence and is doing his job - another thing a lot on here don't realise - it's about doing a job. Not everyone is in the team to get 35 possessions and 10 clearances, just as everyone isn't there to kick 5 goals. It's called "a role".

Well put.

Good point Goldy. When bringing the ball out from the back line, we often clear one side, then switch to a player like Lids or Newy to kick into space for Whitey to run on to it. He also plays the lead up role on the wing for our better kicks to hit up.

I just hope Dimma doesn't overrate our list at the end of the year..like Wallace did at the end of '08 and Spud did at the end of '01 and like much of this board is doing now. Make no mistake, still a lot of deficient players to be cut (and not just those currently at Coburg) and glaring holes that are going to have to be mainly filled via shallow draft pools.

Let's see how we and some of these seemingly "re-born" players go against a top side, that's in top form and at full-strength.

Next year will be the real test. Dimma won't have the same licence he's had this year. His ability as a tactical coach will come under more scrutiny....as will his much-vaunted ability as a developmental coach... will this year's lesser stars back up and break the "one-year wonder" cycle that's been a hallmark of Richmond lists of the last 25 years? How will we stand up when our depth is tested? Which of this year's debutantes will have second year blues? If Cousins leaves..how will the kids react without his influence? All these things and more need to be considered, before we start planning our lives around next year's finals.

Spot on:thumbsu:

Like you Mario I hope the club and supporters don't overate our list going into the end of the year and the start of next. In most areas we almost have zero depth at this stage which has been glossed over due to a great run with injuries this season.

However I am pretty sure that next year will also be assigned, largely, to development. Dimma has said that he wants to get our under 22's to 50 games ASAP. This would have to mean that next year is also about development and that once he has our under 22's with 50 plus games under their belt more will be expected.

The thing that might just hold us up a little in terms of gettting 50 games into some players is the run with injuries we have had this year. I am sure that Dimma would have expected to be able to get more games into guys like Post, Rance and even Gourdis this year but would not have wanted to mess with a side showing promise.

I would expect guys like Polak, Polo, McMahon, Thomson, Hislop to get the axe at the end of this year so going into next year we will truly only have under 19's/under20's as depth players.

Who is over rating the list?

All I see is people congratulating the guys we have at the moment for a job well done. Go and read any of the many 'list management' type threads and you will see almost all of us agree on the 8 or so players that we need to get rid of, White and King included for the most part.

In 2000 Essendon had a super team, and had plenty of blokes who were good players in a good side, but pretty average when moved on. Not one of Heffernan, Blumfield or Caracella improved when they left. I put White in that catergory, along with probably Edwards. Their pace is a huge asset, especially when we become a very good team.

well by comparrison to 2008 I bet we will have more than 4 ND selections. More likely to be 6 or 7 which should answer that q.

The biggest gap I see in our side right now is the lack of genuine support for JR8, I realise players are beginning to emerge as dangerous forwards of which white and collins fall into that slot...we still need more if we are take that step toward finals action

collins should not be pencilled in as a forward. he should be a huge part of midfield rotations. and matt white is all of a sudden a goal kicking small forward sheesh give me a break.

jacks support falls to 3 players possibly 4 they are post astbury griffiths and maybe gourdis. hopefully one of these lads emerges over the next 2 or 3 yrs as a key forward.

to me we have 4 medium sized forwards if you include collins who has always been a goal kicking mid. those four medium forwards are taylor morton collins who is part of rotations and hislop who i consider more a mid but hes been played there.
there are still big queations about taylors ability to tough it out in melb hislops skills and pace and mortons attitude.

small forwards are supposedly;
tambling, gilligan, hicks, nahas nason, roberts, and white.

plenty of numbers but grim pickings indeed.
tambling has been poor for what ever reason wont go there.
gilligan is playing at coburg reserves.
hicks is tiny but apparently shows a bit but is likely a long term propisition, nahas lacks polish and is to small.
nason has been okay has decent skills but in reality has a way to go and does not look a goal sneak to me more of a mid.
roberts has gone already,
white while going okay is not a goal kicker and lacks polish.

You're a fool. The entire team had a shit day. I don't see you bagging Lids, Newman and Riewoldt?

One poor game and everyone brings back all the old stuff as if the prior weeks form was just a miracle.

Santa, you ride people for slapping him on the back when he plays a few good games, yet you come here and do the complete same thing in the opposite direction? Bad form.

Seriously, you think he can be singled out for that performance yesterday? Please feel free to point out where (sensible) people have claimed White to be the next Chris Judd, as opposed to giving him credit for playing some good footy for a month, and simply giving himself a chance to be a top 22 player in years to come.

Anyway, I'm sure you're wishing you hadn't been so churlish at this point.

lol deledio and cuz were the reason we were in the game to half time. once they were taken out of it in the second half it was time for the others to step up.
sheesh jack kicked 3.2 in the wet and gave a contest all day just what do you expect from him 10 goals every week. i thought newman servicable though down a tad on previous weeks.

i will say it again as soon as time and space is taken away from the likes of white they struggle big time.
bloody hell hes a quick big bodied small who should have revelled in those conditions and he failed miserably. he does not find enough ball and his skills break down under pressure this has always been the case.

and cmon get real one poor game. while being sevicable in some games this yr, it is still a case of find the games that are up to standard. its only how does it go oh yeah, fools like you who keep on rating him week in week out.

who singled him out for the loss. he was one of the worst and as such deserved criticism.just like tambling and a few others. or dont players deserve criticism anymore.

has played 12 games this yr. played two good games haw, freo, had two servicable games against wce, bris, and the other 8 have not been good enough.

as stated does not get enough ball for a mid. would be lucky to average 10 possies a game and his skills and decision making fail him badly when he has no time or space.
even in decent games he can be relied upon to make bad mistakes.

Right, but when he is patted on the back for playing some good footy you get stuck into the posters for talking him up to be a superstar when its actually just a slap on the back for an improvement in output. Hypocrite much?

im not getting stuck into posters at all but if i am coming across that way i apologise to all.

i agree big time that we are all entitled to our opinions right or wrong and dont deserve ridicule because of them.

i just happen to disagree with most about white and i believe we should be looking to do better.

Definitely agree with this.

Actually, I think it was quite unlike you to take what came across as a cheap shot at any posters who are giving White a chance. Fair enough if you didn't intend for that.

I hold some hope for White, since I see him playing a role he is asked to play, and doing ok at it most weeks. I see that role to be one of a few running outlet options when transitioning the ball out of defense. Either running wide, or as a hit up target. I also think quite a bit is expected of him defensively. I haven't watched a replay of yesterday's game to see how he went on that front.

To be honest, I wouldn't be overly surprised or disappointed if he was gone in two years time. But I get the impression you just expect to see him get X number of possessions each week, and for them to be of a certain quality, and if not, then he's failed.

Was a ripper interview with him on 3AW the weekend before last, spoke really well, seems to have matured a lot in recent times and it might be starting to show with his footy.

Takes the game on with his pace which makes him a favourite of mine.

heard the other week that his grand father has a tattoo of matty white wearing his richmond jumper on him and his whole family are massive tiger ppl
