We used to be the masters of recruting mature age players from other clubs and turn them into really
good players to help the club go forward. What Happened?

There hasn't really been any off the top of my head that I can think of in the last few years that we've ignored or that we really needed...

We do seem to have tried to go down the more elite route though, targeting higher draft picks and obviously star recruits. I think some of the ones we have got have just flat-out failed to eventuate into stars. Laidler, Towers, Sinclair are all NEAFL-level players.

Laidler for what he cost has been a success regardless of where he goes this year

Not saying he is Craig Bolton, but cmon did not get a game at Carlton

We also were spending more money on these guys where as now we just paid stars and tippett

We were probably in that zone where a Mitchell or Lewis would have been sensible gets, however we probably were as blind sided as most with those two. Steve Johnson as much of a grub as he is would probably have been handy for a year. I'm focusing more on past it champs then mature age recruits though I guess

Yeah but remember sammy mitchell was just a sudden brain wave from clarko to help him become an assistant at the eagles, nothing to do with clearing cap space etc ;)

We won the flag in 2012 then brought in Tippett. In 2013 we snared Buddy and focused on bringing in youth - Jones, Nankervis, Aliir, Hewett. Then in 2014 we were banned from trading for 2 years.

Trading in mature players from other clubs has always been up and down though. For every Ted Richards or Mitch Morton*, there is a Tony Armstrong or Tommy Walsh.

* - most effective mature recruit in Swans history, regardless of whether that's backed up by stats.

the towers newman thing is the wrong comparison. these guys werent even on afl lists.

the successful recruits were all fringe players or players wanting to leave their current clubs - bolton, williams, mattner, schauble, shaw.

we identified a need for certain types of players and went after them. I still think the tippett thing (followed up by buddy) was a mistake. recruiting absolute top end talent is amazing, even though tippett hasnt exactly delivered, but getting needs rather than wants is a better strategy.

Given Reid was our only forward at the time. Tippett was the right decision at that point. Just didn't pay off.

Buddy is a want that any other club would have jumped at in a heart beat.

Tippett became a mistake the instant we signed buddy. But it was timing rather than a list management error.

play better in 2014 and 2016 on the day and this conversation would be different I guess, even re Tippett.
Well tbf Tippett blew chunks in both games. Not like it was a Franklin situation (who is clearly worth the money, maybe not the length of contract though)
