With all the McBean love (mostly correct) i think this kid has slid under the radar a bit. He is my absolute favourite from last draft, pretty decent effort considering he is up against Vlas and McBean. He is so clever and his kicking is close to the best on the list, and he really seems to be knuckling down to be an AFL player which may have been the knock on him pre draft.

Just some extracts from the coburg report

Round 1

Matt McDonough
Played a solid defensive game when down back, and provided great run off half-back as well. Also had an impact when moved forward and into the midfield during the second half.

Round 3

Matt McDonough

Started across half-back and then was moved through the midfield and up forward due to rotations. Was really lively after half-time, producing possibly his best performance of the year. Marking was a highlight of his game.

Round 4

Matt McDonough
Played centre-forward, after being used down back the previous few weeks. Kicked two telling goals and had five clearances in his 18 possessions. Close to his best game at VFL level.

Round 6

Matt McDonough
Played midfield/ forward, kicked three goals, and applied plenty of forward pressure, with six tackles. Intensity at the ball, and opponent, continues to be a real feature of his game

Round 7

Matt McDonough
Played a really solid game, starting forward and then moving into the midfield. Had 25 touches and used the ball extremely well. Stoppage and contested work again were features of his performance.

Round 10

Matthew McDonough
Was used in a variety of roles throughout the match – up forward, down back and through the midfield – in an attempt to plug holes due to injury. Was just okay by his standards.

Round 11

Matthew McDonough
Played through the middle and up forward. Was okay with his defensive pressure, but didn’t have enough offensive involvement in the match.

Round 12

Matt McDonough
Played his best game for the year so far, as a midfielder and forward. Picked up over 25 disposals and contributed to the scoreboard with three or four score involvements.

Round 13

Matthew McDonough
Although he was a little down on his previous week’s form, he still played a valuable role for the team through the midfield and up forward. Had nine clearances, which underlined his improvement in this area.

Round 14

Matthew McDonough
Was a bit sick on the day, so lacked his usual energy and buzz. Played a handy role up forward, however, kicking a goal and helping set up some others.

Round 15

Matthew McDonough
Had a very solid game through the midfield, picking up 20 contested possessions and 15 clearances. Was one of our best players on a day where we were well beaten in the midfield. Continues to improve in all areas of his game.

Round 16

Matthew McDonough

Played a really good game through the midfield and up forward. Helped set up many scoring opportunities with his effective disposal. Tackle pressure and repeated efforts have become a highlight of his game.

I couldnt find the coburg report for a few of those missing rounds and i think he was rested in round 5 as he was not mentioned in the report. Turning into a clearance machine. He was already a brilliant forward in his u/18 days both with kicking and setting up goals but seems to be going to the next level in the midfield at VFL level. Really was hoping he would get a run this year even just one game so he is fired up for pre season, but next year with a full pre season and no injuries (touch wood) he could really explode.

Add to all of this Chocco's cub watch. In it he says he believe McDonough is the most natural footballer on our list.

My lad played junior footy with Matt's younger brother a few years ago.
I vividly recall the little fella's oozing talent from his playing days as an U8 grasshopper!
It must run in the family!

along with Vlaustin and Mcbean, McDonough has been super this year as a first year player, doing everything expected of him and more. The Chapman comparisons are pretty sound, however he also has a bit of Christensen and even Stokes about him, finds the ball, very skilful and can kick a goal. credit to F Jackson in last years recruiting, now i just want to see a bit more from Kamdyn Mac so all the haters that question his 2nd/3rd round recruiting can lay off

I think it's great that he has had the opportunity to have a whole year developing his game and body in the 2nd's instead of getting hammered in the 1's and destroying his confidence and body.

Where does everyone see you Matty playing?

HF: Shane Edwards Tyrone Vickery Chris Knights
F: Matthew McDonough Jack Riewoldt Jake King

???

Will just be another gun midfield rotation who can go forward. By the time Mcdonough gets going, King will have retired and Knights will be there as back up.

Be the greatest draft for a non-expansion club of all time if you weren't.:rainbow:

For all the love, still yet to play an AFL game. Certainly looks like a great kick based on his highlights and his form at Coburg sounds good. Have hopes for him for the future, but I had high hopes for Brad Helbig too.

Totally get this juss, but due to our recruiting from last season we have the ability to allow these guys some time to develop. Unfortunately Hellbig, Griff and others were thrown right into the pressure cooker and got belted. I don't think they were upto it physically. It's great the RFC can allow these new recruits to grow physically and in confidence to step up eventually, (I know there are exceptions, like Tigga) but most recruits are not in that mould. Go Tiges :thumbsu:

I like it too, it's definitely a sign of a good side. Guys really need to earn their spots now.

Don't write off Helbig yet either. He's clearly a class above VFL. If he were actually played in the midfield at AFL level he may surprise. Probably some way off that happening, which is not a bad thing at all.

Can't do much now since he's out for the rest of the season.

Don't forget Cadeyn Williams!!

I like Helbig but McDonough is already ahead of him.

I disagree. Helbig has the overall package as a midfielder. His skills are exquisite but he goes in for the ball as hard as anyone at our club. Loves to tackle as well as kick goals. He's one of the few that Richmond need to nurture correctly. It's a shame that we didn't gift him more games throughout that 2010-2012 period. If we did, I have no doubt he'd be well entrenched in our best 22. He needs confidence!

Why does he always get low numbers at AFL level? All this hype about him being the overall package, i haven't seen him do anything outstanding. Dea 2.0/Post 3.0. All hype no results.

Because he comes up for one or two games and is forced to play a lock down roll in defence.
He is a midfielder through and through. I don't remember the last time I saw him start in the center bounce. I don't even know if it has happened before.

Exactly, every time he's played in the seniors he plays a position he NEVER plays at Coburg.

He'll get his chance.

I don't disagree. I just think McDonough is already better. ;)
