What's the deal with the capacity of the MCG?

Are there any provisions that allow for the MCC to replace seating for standing room?

I thought the new ground was going to hold upto 110,000?

Would the MCC do this if two vic clubs made to grand final?

Will we ever get passed 100,000 again.

Was the stadium full with over 97,000 last sat?

Maybe someone who went could confirm?

from what I gather it's probably about 104,000 or so.

But for that to happen every corporate box, seat and standing room would have to be 100% full (very unlikely). We'll see the true capacity on boxing day if I think..

97,000 with what looked like a few thousand seats empty....

We will get 100,000 soon enough - probably with 2 Victorian teams (when the members is full to the brink)
so in about 2040 we should get 100,000 for a game

There seemed to be quite a bit of room around to stand. Most of the seats looked full though.

My theory is that, for the Grand Final, they should remove the seats behind each goal (like they used to do at the City end in the old days).

This standing room area would only be available to members of each competing club (one club end).

This would increase the capacity by 5000-10000 and partially solve the problem of not enough tickets being available to members.

No you won't...a little thing called sight screens reduces capacity by a a couple of thousand.

How awesome would that be, a mass of hard core fans shoulder to shoulder screaming their voices out.

They would a special roll in chair for the blob though if WC were to make it again.

I agree, I think taking flexible approach to standing room that ground will hold about 105,000

I think the ANZAC clash will top the 97,000 at the granny.

Is there a case to allow for 120,000

i.e. that top ten rows of in the nose bleed seats could be removed. An extra 20,000 tickets for members of the participating clubs would be invaluable.

I would stand to see my team in a granny. I have in the past

The ground was completely full except for the MCC members (whats new?).

There were no seats available, there were 100's outside the ground trying to buy tickets right up til the last minute and there were many many people in Perth who didnt travel to Melbourne because there were no tickets.

The ground would have had a capacity crowd easily if the protected species of old cronies that is the MCC members had to adopt a use it or lose it approach to their tickets.

Rant over... :D

I would love to see some seats removed to pack in a few thousand extra, maybe hit the 110,000 mark, but you couldn't have it up the top cause it would be too steep and could get a little dangerous. Behind the goals at each end would be better.:thumbsu:

Yes, and without the MCC members the capacity would be alot lower

Would never happen in this day and age. Terraces are almost all gone in europe, it's just not safe.

Did you know that if an event has "Gen Admin" only 80-90% of tickets can be sold for that area.

Yeah I think the whole Grand Final should be reserved seating, where the members have to show their interest in the game and pay a fee so that they actually show up.
As I said i'm all for increased standing room, but they should fill up all the members seats before it is introduced. (i was there last year and it was amazing how many spare seats there were)

OH&S pretty much roots the system of getting 120,000 plus I feel, however we will see the 100,000 mark broken. Just give it some time!

So its reasonable that 10 or 15 of my mates (just as an example) miss the game when there are plenty of empty seats (Over 5000 apparently)???

If you want to have the GF in Melbourne for all eternity (and I'm not against that) you've got to do a better job than 16,000 seats for the Eagles (we have 43,000 season ticket holders) and then reserving a whole host of seats for people who dont turn up.

Surely there is some sort of reservation system that could be used..
