Saw him playing in the International Rules, he looks a decent player but maybe a bit thick, like he was trying to be the "tough man" a bit too much, if he concentrated on the ball more, surely he would be better. Now i'm only basing this on 1 IR game so maybe i'll completely wrong, what do ye think?

He actually used the ball well when he got it i thought.

I think the whole team have really got it wrong thinking the irish are soft. They are lightly built, yes, but they sure as hell aren't soft, and they are nowhere near as pampered as the aussie blokes. That bloke didn't even blink when McVeigh went the fake punch.

MacDonnell. (McDonald ?). He wasn't bad was he. Didn't flinch. If anything, the only facial movement was to broaden his grin. Even Carey reacted to Archer's movement.

I`ve backed McVeigh from day one at Essendon.
He was nothing short of embarassing last Sunday night

Atleast he was the only Australian to show some desire snd passion.
He was the one trying to put fear in the Irish and failed.
Should we blame him?NO
If you Bomber supporters are going to bag someone bag James Hird.
When he got the ball he looked very dangerous
but when he didn't have it he let his Irish opponent loose.

You're basing it on that farce of a game, or dare I say, 'International Series'...

I know who's the thick one...

He was probably mesmerised by all the product McViegh had in his hair.

There, I said it. Couldn't resist Johnny...

Don’t confuse a feeble display of thuggery with desire and passion. McVeigh gave MacDonnell a laugh and a 15 metre penalty on the forward line then later gave away a free kick and was sent off. That wasn’t desire and passion, it was stupidity and lack of discipline. Hird was no more unaccountable than anyone else in the team.

Should have hit him. Would have brought some excitement into the game. He def thought about it, but the guy didn't flinch and he looked like a tool. He can make up for it in the second game though... :)

...if he is selected ! Was he reported ? If so, has a tribunal heard the report ? As well as giving away meterage and being sent off, he didn't do much. As a defender in a game where the winning margin was the greatest ever, given his lack of discipline, the only thing that might save his place will be lack of replacements.

So far I haven't heard anything about a tribunal appearance. Was wondering the same thing myself.

Agreed dogsbody, with the possible injuries - will they be able to afford not to pick him if he isn't suspended?

Never seen him act like that before, he's usually just hard at it & a bit of a quiet achiever. Took me a while to warm to him, but now really like him. Was embarrassed by his efforts on sunday tho!

My assessment of him, given that I am not an Essendon supporter and so don't see much of him, is that he is extremely competitive and gets down on himself when he loses a contest. I never considered him a thug, though. I wonder whether he was led to believe that the way to beat the GAA players was through over physicality and took it too seriously. The biff didn't work last Sunday. I hope the Australians don't come out and try to be over physical this Sunday at the expense of playing the game. That's why they lost the first so badly. The way to win a game in this series is to work harder than the GAA players - getting to the contest, running in support and getting back behind the ball.

I tend to agree. Never saw him as the type of player who tries to intimidate - just backs himself in a contest instead. Which is one of the things that impresses me about him. He also is a beautiful kick of the ball & his disposal is usually good.

IMO we just looked stupid last week - like big, slow thugs who couldn't keep up. I expect a different approach this week.
