for the first time in a long long long long long long long long long long long time... too little longs, but regardless, our defence has been crap, well do you know what, it isnt any more, and i can say that with confidence, our midfield isnt half bad either, our forward needs some work, ie miller and bate and davey and wonna need help like a big fella, hell keep the dutchy one down there

Re: Melbournes defence

Defence was good because the midfield was good, plain and simple. We put enough pressure on the ball coming into the 50 to make it difficult for the forwards.

Re: Melbournes defence

We still require a young gun back pocket to complete it but they are hard to find. Most talented youngsters don't like to be 'wasted' in defence and are instead dominating the midfield.

Re: Melbournes defence

i think for the first time in a long time our defensive stocks are looking on the up!

IMO however a defense is only as good as it's midfield and the defensive pressure they can apply on the ball coming in- that's what all good teams do and that's what we managed to do on the weekend.

that's not to put down their efforts at all, but i think a team's defense starts outside their attacking fifty.

You are spot on. I think the Hawks have an average defence but their midfield puts on plenty of pressure.

Re: Melbournes defence

I'd hold on a bit before I decide our defence is great. One week doesn't erase them being bent over and done in the arse by Adelaide.

Bingo.

I can see why it can be exciting to see our defence play well for once (and keep a team under 100 points!) but we will get a further test this week against a Saints side out to make amends for last week.

why on earth isn't whelan in this side?

This question is the equivelent of some ignorent arseh*le asking 'Why on earth isn't Lucas playing?' (Note: Not calling you an arseh*le, just felt i was the correct description of someone asking a stupid question.)

Coming back from injury. Again. Don't let his continual absence fool you, if he is fit, he plays pure and simple.

well thank you for your harsh response

i was not aware he was injured as he has not been listed on any injury list i've seen in the last 4 weeks. Whereas Lucas has been listed on all of them so i don't quite think it's the same.

Does any1 know what this injury is (think he's been out for about 5 or 6 weeks now without it being listed), and when is he due back?

Our defence looked good on the weekend that is for sure, and there are a few reasons for that. The thing I liked is that they played hard and with a fair bit of confidence and look like they could create a real standard down back where other players have to earn their spot which is great. Having said that I agree with other posters who aren't penciliing in anything just yet.

Harsh it may be, but not unwarranted.

If you read the thread about the team to play next week against St kilda, whelan is mentioned as back from injury in about every second post. But instead of putting in an effort, you make posts in 2 different threads so you get an answer straight away. I think arseh*le was being to soft.

I'm all for people from other clubs posting on the melbourne boards, often it creates interesting conversation. But if you don't have enough respect to look to see if what you're asking has already been posted about, don't bother. At least you didn't start another thread

He was listed on the injury list in round 8 at least, he's been out with a hamstring injury.

His last game was round 5, he was listed to play in round 6 and never did...he certainly wasn't listed as injured for at least the vast majority of that time so excuse me for not knowing...i did plaenty of looking and found nothing.

i did look in 2 posts to find out, both relating to melbourne's defence (he is a defender so logically...), and again, no word, so i asked...is that so bad after geniunely trying to find out over the course of six weeks?

You'd think i was on here hanging shit on your team, rather than taking a genuine interest in a traditional team that i've adopted as my 2nd team, watching every week, and hoping they get back up the ladder and their supporters start turning up before it's too late...been following melb closely this year and that's why i care...you are the arseh*le.
