Over the past few years Melbournes coaching staff and the board has come under fire. But why hasn't the recruitment straff under pressure.

2005:
#12Nathan Jones (Honest trier but not a world beater) Shannon Hurn and Grant Birchall were the next 2 picks. I know which 2 I prefer.

They also trades picks #28 and #44 for Byron Pitckett and #54.

Bernie Vince, Andy Swallow and Alipate Carlisle were all taken between #33 and #44. Could of had 2 of those. At least 1.

2006:
#12 James Frawley. Good pick.
#30 Ricky Petterd but Kurt Tippett was taken at #32.
#46 Colin Garland but Will Scofield was taken at #50.

They didn't take part in the rookie draft but Clint Jones, Sharrod Wellingham and Matt Suckling were 2nd round picks..

Agian another poor draft with the exception of Frawley.

2007:
Traded pick #38 for John Messen. Poor ruckman, could of used that pick on James Polkinghorne (who went 41) and picked up young Ben McEvoy with pick 4 in stead of Cale Morton.

#14 Jack Grimes. Good player, but Callum Ward went #19. Overall a decent selection.

#21 Aadam Maric. Who has been traded. Scott Selwood and Tayte Pear were the next 2 picks.

#53 Kyle Cheney. Who has since been delisted/traded to the Hawks.

2008:
#1 Jack Watts, could have taken Nic Nat or Hurley.
#17 Sam Blease, Luke Shuey went the next pick.
#19 James Strauss, Jackson Trengrove and David Zaharakis followed.
#35 Jamie Bennell, Mitch Robinson and Rory Sloan went a few picks later.
#51 Neville Jetta, not much around here. But Shane Savage did go #75.

This was a shocking draft. WCE and Essendon pass on there regards.

They did snag Jordie McKenzie in the rookie draft with #1.

2009:

#1 and #2 were used on Tom Scuelly and Jack Trengrove. But Martin and Butcher were also in the top 10. Would of taken Martin and Trengrove personally.

#11 was used on Jordan Gysberts. But Kane Lucas and Lewis Jetta were avialable.

#18 was used on Luke Tapscott. Not a bad player, but Nat Fyfe was taken at #20 and Ryan Bastinac at #21.

#34 Max Gawn, but Sam Ried was taken at #38.

In the rookie draft,

They took Micheal Newton and John Messon, over looking a guy called Micheal Barlow and Alex Silvaghi.

Again a poor draft.

2010:
#12 Lucas Cook, but Jack Darling was there. I know every club over looked him, but Melbourne should of taken him. Ready made forward.

#33 Jeremy Howe. Decent pick.

#50 Troy Davis & #53 Tom McDonald. Not much late in the draft.

2011:
They went after Mitch Clark and paid over the odds. Had they taken better KPP in the drafts before they could of used pick #12 on Devon Smith.

Too early to tell of there other selections.

I know the draft is hard, and your not going to everyone right. But Melbourne have seriously failed. Had they made better selections there starting line up this week could be.

FB: Clint Batram - James Frawley - Will Schofield.
HB: Hurn/Birchall - Jarrad Rivers - Jack Grimes
C: Luke Shuey - Dustin Martin - Nat Fyfe
HF: Polkinghorne - Sam Ried - David Zaharakis
FF: A Davey - Kurt Tippett - Jack Darling

Rucks: Nic Nat - Micheal Barlow - Jack Trengove.

Interchange from: Ben McEvoy, Scott Selwood, Bernie Vince, Sucking, Robinson, Silvanghi, Devon Smith, Howe and Lewis Jetta

You would make a fantastic recruiting manager. Just see if you can do it after the players have played a few years like youve done you cant miss.

Also the job of a recruiter is assess talent and find the next future stars of the comp!

Saying who you could get in hindsight is stupid. Geelong and every other club could be negatively criticised as well this way.

You could do this exercise for every club and come up with a near-All Australian side. If you’re gonna cherry pick all the eventual guns years later, most recruiting teams will have made their share of mistakes.

Even look at Hawthorn, they built an unbelievable young side that won the flag, all the while stuffing up a few top 10 picks (Dowler, Throp, Ellis…).

On topic, this was a good article the other week re Melbourne’s drafting. Not entirely their fault, but the game has gone a different way.

I don't see the point of cherry picking the player's they missed - most clubs are guilty of missing Fyfe as an example.

However the talent they have secured is well under par for the draft picks they have had over half a dozen years. Sure not every pick is going to be a winner, but it should even out.

It's easy in hindsight but considering the amount of top 20 picks they had in 08 and 09 they have done very poorly.
I think this is the problem. 2006-2007 and 2010-2011 you can excuse them, but there were picks from 2008-2009 that have already started to make a name for themselves in the comp, and none of them are at Melbourne. It was also the period Melbourne had the best picks in the land.

Naitanui, Hurley, Shuey, Martin, Fyfe, Bastinac, Barlow were all available around their picks and they completely missed them.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Actually a bloody decent team.

When you look at it like that it hasnt really been that bad with the exception of 2008. Scully leaving is not the fault of the recruiting staff.

Lewis The Lightning Jetta is on the rise so it seems and the Dees the decline - all after 3 rounds.

Neeld needs his time, like Lewis has had his.

Melbourne couldve had Lewis Jetta, we went up to WA to have a look
at Neville before drafting and Nevilles Mother told Connelly that Nevilles
cousin is the one they should be looking at.

There is NO excuse for our poor recruiting over the past few years,
not interviewing Dustin Martin is a joke, the kid was a deadset standout
under Trengove for number 2.

Its not the Jack Watts pick that gets to Dees supporters, its picks like
Shuey to WC, Darling, Sloene, Fyfe and other gems that get through
and considering we had most picks than anyone - its a poor effort.

Development of the draft picks we have had over those years has also
been well below standard, all round its not good.

Interesting post, but a bit of nitpicking:

Jonesy is going great now, but the rest from those few years are poor.

Blease and Strauss have both snapped their legs.

You failed to mention Jurrah, and I don't think Naitanui would benefit us.

Garland>Schofield.

No way has Lucas shown more than Gysberts, that's just unreasonable.

Howe at 33 is unbelievable, if you're going to criticise you have to praise in equal measures.

Meesen and Newton were both under contract and needed to be re-rookied, Silvagni was playing four our affiliate and we didn't need him.

Clark has kicked 9 in 3 games and dominated the last two, satisfied with him over whoever the heck Devon Smith is. Pick 12 is not overpaying.

Prendegast is gone anyway.

** I don't disagree, our recruiting has been diabolical. Would be interesting to see us with a good senior brigade.

JG: Jack Trengove?
