Its going to be bloody hard going for 15 days starting this Friday night in Melbourne. Nestled mid-week in between three A-League fixtures, there's the dual-leg AFC Champions League quarter-final matches. Here's the schedule...

Friday September 12 -- Melbourne Victory vs. Adelaide United; Telstra Dome, Melbourne
Wednesday September 17 -- Kashima Antlers vs. Adelaide United; Kashima Soccer Stadium, Japan
Saturday September 20 -- Sydney FC vs. Adelaide United; Sydney Football Stadium
Wednesday September 24 -- Adelaide United vs. Kashima Antlers; Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide
Saturday September 27 -- Adelaide United vs. Newcastle Jets; Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide

For those who want to come down and experience either competition, then VenueTix is where to go first.

Re: Adelaide United's big September workout

This schedule arouses me greatly. I feel our toughest assignment is at the Dome on Friday nite ... I will be there! If we can get a win or even a draw out of that we will go to Japan with great confidence.

Go the mighty Reds!

Re: Adelaide United's big September workout

It really is a mental month but it's great.

Everything is on the line though, a bad month and we are in a bit of strike. A good month and it sets us up for the rest of the season.

I really can't wait for this Friday's game, just hoping I am not sick by then.. even though I'm sure a few bourbons and an Adelaide United win will fire me up...

Re: Adelaide United's big September workout

Went to the game vs Victory on Friday nite. Shame we lost but it was awesome fun being there, a great atmosphere and impressive crowd of 24K considering there was an AFL final going on down the road.

The spitting incident and penalty were obviously the two talking points but the real worry was how many chances we wasted. How many headers did we send a metre over the crossbar? It was so frustrating!

They probably had their mind on Wednesday nite for a lot of the match, even if subconsciously but it was disappointing not to at least get away with a draw after having an extra man for the last hour.

Can anyone confirm that Alagich passed on his #2 shirt to Cornthwaite at the end of last season? It think that's what happened. Did Cornthwaite used to be #9?

Re: Adelaide United's big September workout

Cornthwaite used to be #18.

Alagich handed him the #2 saying he was confident he would wear it proudly.

Where abouts did you stand - and did you go to the Celtic Club pre-game?

was a mad bus trip - shame about the result.

Re: Adelaide United's big September workout

Thanks for that. Couldn't remember what number Cartwright used to be.

We actually had seats in Row A, seats 1 and 2 in the Adelaide section and another friend had a ticket in Row D but we sat / stood just behind the first few rows in the bay where all the Adelaide fans were..

Didn't go where the rest of the supporters were either before or after. Went back to the Locker Room bar after the game and was almost relieved we lost ... there were a few arguments that could have easily got out of hand had the Melbourne supporters been a bit angrier. I was bravely sporting the only red shirt in the bar, surrounded by a sea of dark blue.

Have u been to that bar? One of the girls who works there has the most impressive rack I have ever seen. It's worth the price of admission just to be entitled to a good look while she digs out the ice to go with your scotch. :)

Anyone watching the Asian Champions league?

Adelaide just scored through guess who....Dodd! Only 47 minutes to hang on:)

Having an away goal will be priceless.

Re: Adelaide United's big September workout

Dodd is the heart and soul of our club. Legend :)

Woke up to a great result this morning, top work Adelaide. We can all look at the Cornthwaite blunder but if that didn't happen, they probably would have scored anyway at some stage, who was to know what would happen!

There is no way we can take part in the tournament next year though is there? Even if we won the ACL?

I think we will progress if we win the ACL.

I think the winner this year went straight into the Quarters maybe as there were only 7 groups.

Cornflakes should be sacked.

The rule has changed I think we get to qualify but only for group stages. Definitely know its changed so the winner doesn't go straight through to the quarter finals.

Re: Adelaide United's big September workout

Under the new structure, there is no place for a defending champion. Couldn't find the official AFC document, so this will have to do:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFC_Champions_League_2009#Qualifying_teams

Which means if we win it, there are a few possible outcomes:

1. We miss out regardless, due to the structure of the qualifying teams being strictly adhered to.
2. The FFA reconsider which two clubs to nominate for the ACL next season.
3. The AFC force the FFA to reconsider which two clubs to nominate for the ACL next season.
4. The AFC find a spot for us somewhere - extremely unlikely I think.

Personally, I think the only way we will get in is if the FFA decide to nominate us instead of CCM or Newcastle. I think the AFC might lean on them to do this, but couldn't see the AFC having the balls to actually make the decision. Personally, even if we win it, I doubt we will be in it next season. Which is ridiculous.

In worse news, one of my dopey mates decided to be born 23 years before next Wednesday, and is having a barbeque to celebrate the fact... and he doesn't even have Foxtel!

Re: Adelaide United's big September workout

If we do win it all (lol) the AFC will probably do something dodgy ala what UEFA did with Liverpool a few years ago. (or another less analagous situation, what UEFA did to force the FA to sort out the FA / FAW farce that prevented the Welsh clubs qualifing for Europe before last years FA Cup final.)

BTW, how the Ref didn't blow for half time after they had a thrown in around halfway after the 2 mins were already gone was a disgrace. /whinge

Re: Adelaide United's big September workout

I have been caught up in the Cornflakes u sux debate but the 2 mins had elapsed well before Cornflakes scored a wondergoal. Dodd did say that to the ref.

What I found amusing was their bellend gaffer crying to the assistant refs at halftime?? Twat.

A friend who does this to you is not a friend ha ha.

If we win the ACL ... and who's to say we can't if we can get thru to the semis ... I reckon they will find a place for us in the comp next year somehow. Urawa went down to the Kuwaiti team last nite so anything can happen!

Cartwright's goal was poor even by own goal standards but certainly the potato field was at least partly to blame. It was the only way Eugene was going to be beaten last nite, the man is on fire. Surely his stocks are rising and he must be considered as Schwarzer's understudy for home Socceroos' ties?

Dodd's header was awesome, so ironic that he couldn't get one on target from about 20 chances against Melbourne tho! Still, I would rather the draw against Kashima, that was vital!

We can do this thing on Wednesday nite, everything is with us now. Kashima have to play a J-League game on the weekend too than travel all the way here. If it is 1-1 in regular time we surely will beat them in extra time or we will win one of the most memorable penalty shoot outs ever! Galekovic's sixth sense is our secret weapon :)

Can't wait for next Wednesday. Of course, we must tackle the Bling/Scum first. Gonna have to rest some guns for that one, can see us playing for a draw again.
