Although I don't come from Liverpool and don't have any connection to the city, my support of Everton FC has meant an unavoidable attatchment to the city and to its people.

And it's that attatchment that has made me appreciate so many things in life a lot more, because you get to learn a lot more about things such as a sense of family and community, and stoicism in face of adversity. It's these things that strengthen communities more than anything, and never has the need for such been so needed as it is now.

The tragedy is that many people, in England and beyond, have over the years been given a negative perception of the city of Liverpool and of the people that come from there, and it's something Scousers have often had to face when leaving their beloved city. Part of the reason for these negative perceptions is the results of socio-economic hardships wrought on the city over the years as its once strong industries went into decline. This has resulted in a Scouse diaspora which stretches to the four corners of the globe.

The unfortunate jokes about hubcaps, the dole cheats, drug dealers, striking workers, rioters (Toxeth, 1982)... have all helped to create this negative and in many ways undeserved perception. Undeserved, because many towns in England and beyond have been just as bad and in many cases WORSE in this respect, and often people need to look at their own backyard.

And even so far away, Scousers have maintained an attatchment to their city and community like I've seen from few others. Looking at Liverpool today, it is indeed heartening to see the gradual regeneration of a much-maligned city.

And yet, what we see, is that out of this the city of Liverpool has wrought something beautiful. Few cities if any can claim to make such an enduring contribution to the things that we love so much in life. The city has two cathederals, two football clubs, some lovely historic buildings, theatres, art galleries and one of the most celebrated music scenes of all. Liverpool is nothing to be ashamed of- it is a city whose enduring accomplishments are to be cherished and celebrated by all.

The sense of community shown by many of my scouse friends, and the attatchment to their home even after many years away, is simply incredible. My time with them has given me a very different outlook on things than what I used to have, and for this I'll always be grateful because it's made me all the more determined to maintain such a spirit where I live at this moment.

I have friends in Liverpool and visited them a few years ago. I thought it was a great city, one of my favourites in the UK actually.

Having said that - GO CHELSEA!!

You're a complete tool.

You're basing your (strong) opinion on word-of-mouth. You haven't even been there.

You're one of many fools on this forum who base their opinions on hearsay, emotional strings, and the guy down the pub. Maybe it be better if you made your opinions based on fact and first-hand experiences.

This wasn't so much meant to be a sporting thread so much, as a thread which celebrates the city and the lives its people live.

I mean, the charm of the city and its people seems so alluring even so far away, and when one of my mates from there visited Sydney in 2000 we had a great time together in the bar! These people love to talk, drink, have fun- it's what memories are made of!

Scousers have a funny accent and a somewhat unusual sense of humour which even I have trouble understanding at times :D but so what, it's all so good-natured once you dig deep enough.

Not just Liverpool, but the area around it- Southport, St Helens, Widnes, Warrington, Birkenhead, Runcorn, Ellsmere Port, and to an extent even Cheshire and north Wales. I know quite a few people there and will probably visit them if I get the chance next year. That's if I can't get some of them over here for the great coastal road trip!

Can't say I thought much of Liverpool when I went there, it did strike me as being a bit of a dump. The City Centre was alright but the 'burbs, well they're nothing to write home about. The jokes? Well put it this way, they endure for a reason ...

Sorry bin dippers, just the impression I got from the place.

Ha ha....another misguided toffee.

As Shankly said, the two best teams on Meseyside are Liverpool and Liverpool reserves!

I'll go with that, and I dont even like the Reds!

The best thing to come out of Liverpool is Smeggy Dave Lister :D

On the subject...

It has just been announced that the Ferrari Formula 1 Team have fired their entire Pit Crew yesterday.

The action followed Ferrari's decision to take advantage of the British Governments Work For the Dole Scheme and hire unemployed youths from Liverpool.

The decision was brought on by a recent documentary on how unemployed Scousers were able to remove a set of car wheels in less than 6 seconds, without proper equipment, whereas Ferraris existing crew could only do it in 8 seconds with millions of pounds worth of high-tec gear.

This was thought to be an excellent and bold move by the Ferrari
management, as most F1 races are won and lost in the pits. Ferrari are seen now to have a massive advantage over every other team.

However, Ferrari got more than they bargained for, during the Scouse Crews first practice session not only were they able to change the tyres in under 6 seconds, but within 12 seconds they had also re-sprayed, re-badged, and sold the vehicle to the McLaren team for four dozen cans of Special Brew, a gram of Coke and a quick shufty at Coulthards bird in the shower.

;)

So we get a typical reply. First I'm "living in the past" and now I'm "in love with a dump" ?

All I'm trying to do is shatter the unfortunate stereotypes which go around. Stereotyping of any group is wrong, and I've never been one to resort to it, but nobody is denying the social problems associated with Merseyside either.

If anything, it's such problems, it's such depression over the years which can make people even more determined to succeed. It's out of adversity that some of the most enduring accomplishments can be made, and I'm sure any fair-minded person can appreciate that.

As has been pointed out to you, you've never been there, so you'd be hardly the type to 'shatter stereotypes'. Meeting a few in a bar hardly counts.

Wake up out of your slumber. Merseyside is hardly the place for magic, fairy tales and candy. And yes, you are still living in the past - hardly surprising when Merseyside has done jack all in a decade.

Guess what La? I once lived in Liverpool. As friendly as the people are, the place is a dump. Full of thieves and skag.

There is a reason why Liverpool and Scousers have the stereotype that they do.

I was there in April, went to Anfield, King Dock etc, the docks and city were ok but the parts around Anfield and Goodison Park are nowhere you' feel like leaving a car full of luggage. I thought there must have been a huge urban reclamation program going on with all the boarded up windows around. But apparently they just got sick of replacing the glass.

Must be a youth pastime over there, I was in a pub in Hindley -near Wigan- after closing, and a brick came through the window. Market St, the main street was all boarded up. The people may have great spirit and community but I wouldn't be walking around there post dusk, Liverpool was definitely the biggest hole I've come across.

Best thing to come out of Liverpool
