McGuane hand up for Tigers

COLLINGWOOD premiership player Mick McGuane has approached Terry Wallace about filling one of the assistant coaching roles at Richmond next season.

Top player: Mick McGuane at Carlton training in 1997.

McGuane rang Wallace to tell the new Tigers boss he had something to offer the club after his success as coach in Tasmania and in the Bendigo League in recent seasons.

He took Burnie from the bottom of the ladder to a premiership in the second of his two seasons in the Northern Tasmanian League and is now on target to take Gisborne, in the BFL, to its third straight flag.

"I have served my apprenticeship to a degree now," McGuane said last night.

"I have been coaching five years.

"I would love to sit down and have a chat and basically put on the table what I think I can bring to a footy club.

"You look at your playing days, being involved in a premiership, Leigh (Matthews) coaching me for 10 years and what I've done since." Wallace told McGuane he would get back to him once Danny Frawley's term ends this weekend.

all i really remember about him is his coments on chanel 7 when they had the footy. didnt like him much, i thought he was a bit stupid. maybe its because he was a magpie....what do you all think about him?

No idea what he would be like as an assistant. But at least its refreshing to see someone put their hand up rather than sitting around waiting and saying they haven't been asked yet.

Having seen quite a few Gisborne games over the past three seasons (the Bulldogs are odds-on for their third straight Bendigo League flag), I'd be prepared to say that Mick's highly cerebral approach to the game would probably be an asset.

However, he does historically carry with him a little bit of baggage, although admittedly he drinks far less than Kevin Sheedy nowadays, and seems to have toned down his gambling (he has effectively been a professional punter throughout most his post-AFL days).

We could do far, far worse. (eg. Phil Carman - who is a complete joke)

Most people that I've heard speak about McGuane are full of praise for him. Said to have a very good football brain. I'd be very pleased to see in on the coaching panel.

Mick Mcguane NO THANKS. An alcoholic gambler and someone who would corrupt our young list youv'e got to be kidding.

Anthony Stevens much better.

I don't want to say too much more, nut, as might give the perception that I'm some great advocate for McGuane. I'm not.

However, I will point out once again that Kevin Sheedy is, nowadays, a far greater drunk than Mick, and would probably spend more on the horsies too if my sources are accurate.

Would you have considered Sheeds ?

McGuane has all the hallmarks of a very good assistant. Great tactical nous, success at the clubs he has coached, premiership success as a player, played under some very good coaches (Parkin, Matthews), desperation to succeed and, most importantly, a point to prove.

He has been doing some forward scouting for the Bulldogs and I'd be very happy to see him appointed as an assistant.

I saw his influence on the Burnie dockers over a couple of seasons and couldn't really question his coaching ability, but i like others would have some real concerns over the personal baggage that he could bring to the club.

I'd rather not go into details as to how his problem with gambling has affected others but if the details are true then i would prefer he stay well clear, regardless of how well his coaching record speaks.

thats what concerns me also, Mcguane appers to have all the makings of a second grade coach but at the top level you need every thing going your way, squeaky clean....Baggage can come back to haunt and derail alot of good work....little like politicians....Life would be much easy to stay the well away

The bloke is a bigger p..shead than what i am , and i have personally seen him in full flight on more than one occasion .

Why do you think Collingwood and Carlton have had nothing to do with him since he finished up .

Thanks but no thanks Mick

Must have been a while since you seen him in full flight. He's hardly drank in ages. He might have one or two. Is that considered to be uncommon?

It's so easy for people to jump in with the old " I saw him" script. The fact that you knew who he was as soon as you saw him, indicates that he must have done something worthwhile in football.

2 Copeland Trophy's

Want his coaching record and money raising efforts too?
Talk about being precious.

Don`t think i am being precious just stating the facts as i see them .

If he has cleaned up his act then good on him . You still don`t answer the question as to why Collingwood and Carlton pretty much disowned him ?

Charity Work ? Good stuff

Coaching record ? Slight difference between Gisbourne ( if that is where he coaches )and the big leagues.

Lasted one year as a commontater , seems to me he tends to burn his bridges a bit . Richmond really need to get it right this time so IMO , i would pass on him . No offence Mick ( and jonny )

I have to agree with you IDGAF. Id prefer someone like Anthony Stevens. There would be a lot of hypocritical people in coaching roles because they are demanding things from youngsters they didnt do themselves in the eighties. How does McGuane get into say, Zantuk over some late night escapade. Back in Micks Day they did everything to cover up now they are fronted up to the media for far lesser incidents.

Having someone who has taken a long time to grow up and having them in a position of leadership at the club overrides anything they did on the playing field. Look at Dermie at Hawthorn

A
BIG
NO
let us get better men than him.
the ones we just sacked are
all equal of McGuane, and they
were all useless.

Currently broke and sleeping on the couch at one of his players residence. He just wants a job that pays so he can have a punt on the spring carnival.

Well, he got paid last night. He did a guest speakers spot at the Riverland Football League's presentation night.

By the way - he is very confident of getting the Richmond job and expects to hear from Terry Wallace in the next few days.

Give me the player's name and I'll confirm or refute it within 24 hours.
