This gets down to whether Pagan believes that we have another premiership left in this group or not. If he does, he may want Micky to play on. However, if we are building for the next assault, they should blood a Watt or Hilton. They won't get experience in the Magoos.

I'd go with the latter. It would be football suicide to put yourself in a position with too many senior players retiring at once. Also, you never know what injuries you may have at the time too.

So who would you put at full back then?

Why does my statement of the obvious necessarily mean that I have to nominate his replacement ?
With his usual meticulous planning, I am sure Pagan has a ready-made replacement waiting in the wings. (not)

.. which is the reason why I personally would want to keep Martyn. I don't want to put my faith in a guy who is not yet at the club.

Martyn might be "Gone" (remembered the capital G ;)) as you put it, but can we seriously expect whatever replacement to be as effective as an out-and-out champion who might not play more than 10 games at 100%? In my personal opinion, the answer is no.

Martyn is asking Pagan for one final game this weekend. It sounds like a man desperate to retire on the field. I hope it isn't the case, because an injury free Martyn is still one of the best fullbacks in the game.

Darky,
I don't share your opinion of Martyn. A likeable bloke, a cult figure, an immensely strong & courageous player, but a champion ? Never. Just a very good player who made the most of his limited skills.

What is a champion??

In my opinion if you have played over 250 games at the highest level, been at the one club for 12-13 years, won a club best & fairest, been amongst your team's best players in both premiership years, played on 3 of the greatest full forwards of all time, then you have done enough to be called a champion...

You are a pessimistic dill Dark Rider.

Martyn is not a Champion???

Have a look at our win -loss record without him.

And he has played on some of the greatest players of all time, and maintained his standing as the cornerstone of our premiership sides.

Not to mention two best and fairests.

Seeking attention from ridiculous pessimism is not a great way of making a name from oneself.

Anyone questioning Mick Martyn's status as a champion of the game has to have their ability to understand football severely questioned.

Aussie_Roo,

To answer your question, Carey is a champion, Skilton was a champion, Mathews was a champion, Hudson was a champion. Martyn is (was) a good player. The difference is obvious.
Supporters love Mick, and therefore tend to credit him with virtues which he simply doesn't have. Whether he has played all his games at the one club, or won a club B&F has nothing to do with it either.

KHM,
Abusing me does nothing to add to your credibility either. Mick is not now, and never has been, a champion. The nearest we have had to a champion in the fullback position, by the way, was Dench, who was a much better player than Mick.

Apparently you haven't heard of Jock McKorkell, Vic Lawrence, Jack Edwards and John Dugdale as Fullbacks?
Ask Tony Locket his opinion of Mick Martyn.
Bob Skilton played his entire career for a bottom side and stood out for that reason. (But yes he was a great Player)
None of your so called Champions played at Fullback.
Mick Aylett was a Champion and played for Victoria with Skilts.
Mick won the Tassie Medal, a Champion in a Champion Team.
P.S But he wasn't a Fullback either.
P.P.S This isn't a abusive Post either.:) :)

You have missed the point. My reply to Aussie-Roo was not in the context of whether a player was a full back or not. It was about defining the type of player who deserves to be called a champion.

My (separate) reply to KMH on the other hand, was to the point that Mick was by no means the best full back we have had, which you appear to have agreed with.

An obvious, meaningful and significant statistic for full backs would be "goals kicked against". This stat is still ignored and never kept (and admittedly is becoming less relevant because there is less positional play) but Mick's dad kept this stat for Mick over several seasons and he had LESS than 2 goals per game kicked against him on average. I'd say they're the stats of a champion full back!

Darkrider,

Are you sure you're not an alias of Moti.com? You speak as much shyt as him. I wish you would go forth and multiply - Everything you speak is absolute diatribe and negative and I've had enough of you.

Tall poppy syndrome - thats what I would call you. Mick Martyn was included in our team of the century. Up yours!!

That's fine, my definition of a champion differs from yours. In my opinion you don't have to be the most skillful player to be classed a champion ie: your Anthony Stevens, Brett Rattens', Michael Martyns' etc... I am just thrilled that the Team of the Century selection committee didn't share your views when naming their champion team..

The TOTC committee did not have the balls to omit him, so they gave him the consolation prize of a back pocket. Weak.

Go back to your studies sonny. You need many more years of education (and football experience) before you are equipped to debate with me.
