Hey guys,

I really wana try and break into the midfield for my team next year.

Last year I played ressies and this year I played a fair chunk in the seniors. It was good but I was only really used as a small forward, half back flanker.

Next season I really wana bulk up and have a crack at getting into the midfield.

Does anyone know any good weight programs for midfielders? (if there is such a program). I just wana know what players like Judd/ Ablett etc work on to become stronger in the core to break tackles etc.

Any help would be great.

Cheers,
Steve

I would be looking at a strength program combined with a ruthless running program to get your engine up to scratch before anything. Hypertrophy based programs I feel are fairly useless for the midfield overall because of the effect it has on your engine.

Also, talk to your coaches about why you didn't play midfield, maybe they have a reason for it.

Well im 20yo about 180cm and weigh about 75.

I was probably just abit to skinny to be playing on the ball, get pushed off pretty easily.

you need to train like a repetitive sprint runner, so the focus is through the areas connected in through your hips - abs, obliques, lower back, driver part of your quad. So for power in those areas squats and dead lifts, and ab work to stabilise. Some basic bounding once per week would help.

Seconded. Look at doing 4-5 sets, working the weight up so you are only getting between 3-5 reps. Lift HEAVY. Look at doing single leg work as well, like split squats with the back leg raised, single leg squats with a box to sit on if need be.

If you at that serious, perhaps look at working with a strength and conditioning coach through the off season

You would really want to work on the core - blokes like Judd, Ablett and Bartel have cores as hard as a rock.

Things like sit-ups, bridging, and other exercises that work the abs are the best
