This is my one pet hate. I am sick to death of misinterpreting, and being misinterpreted!!!

I've had an email conversation this morning that i dont know how to gauge. Possibly i am reading too much into it, as girls have a tendency to do, but jeez some people can be hot and cold cant they!

I generally try to make an effort to be fairly expressive with emails, texts, posts, ensuring that people understand whether i am joking, happy or angry... using bolds, faces, punctuation etc.

Its amazing how many people when writing something dont understand tone. I have a friend that always texts me in upper case - whereas i only text in upper case when angry. And emails, my ex always sends emails with upper case writing. So i get this big long email from him, and its like he is yelling at me!!

There. Had my rant. Does anyone else have this problem or know what i mean? :D
 
Ahh net etiquette. Comes with usage I suppose. One of the many problems I also face is being misunderstand wether it be on ICQ or emails. But usually on ICQ.

You cant be to complacent though..I always use emoticons b/c if I don't it just seems like some monotone reply.

The worst is communicating with people who don't use the net on a everyday basis. :( :o


BTW we need better and newer emoticons! :o

i agree, some of these are getting old!!

BB666, i do get what you mean tho... especially with SMS's... im the same as you where i always write in lower case unless i want to emphasize something. when people write a whole msg in upper case, it seems like they're either angry, over excited or just screaming!

thats why you cant really base anything on the conversations had on the net, because they can be interpreted in any way!
 
Caps on the Internet are annoying and only for stupid people.. but caps on the phone I couldn't care less about cos some older phones automatically are in caps, and most people CBF changing it.

Exactly...you've really gotta be careful with what you say, you have to think twice...I always think about what I say because I'm aware that without tone etc it might look different, as often happens...and people always say stuff to me and I can't tell if they are angry/upset/joking...which is what gets me into trouble, I always have to ask them :D

Maybe your friend has one of those old brick phones that only use upper case. I don't, and for me putting things in upper-case means shouting and screaming.
And different writing styles in different situations. On emails and message boards I'll use correct grammar and spelling, but on sms or chat it'll all be in lower case with abbreviations.
 
Hehehehe sometimes in chat I use caps but just to annoy people. :D With SMS and e-mail etc I only use caps if I wanna emphasise something, or am actually angry. ;) I use as many emoticons as possible, especially where something could be misinterpreted. My ex and I used to do that to each other all the time, take things TOTALLY the wrong way. :o

They should be used sparingly - when you want to emphasise a word or sentence. Besides, CAPS are much harder to read.

I always just reply to them, 'it's okay, I can still hear you if you type in lower case'. Most times it is someone who has just started using text, and isn't aware of the etiquette. This usually gives them the hint.
