Joe Misiti was today made a vice-captain of the Essendon Football Club. He joins Sean Wellman, Matthew Lloyd and Mark Mercuri who already hold the title while James Hird will again captain of club. Misiti, who made his debut in 1992, has played 181 senior games with the Bombers. At the end of last season he was also made a life member of the club. Misiti was naturally thrilled when Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy announced his on-field role in front of his teammates before training. "It's great. I have played at Essendon all my life and grew up in the area - to be a part of the leadership group will be a challenge but I'm looking forward to it," Misiti said.

"I'm sure there are a number of players deserving of the job so it is a real honour. In some ways everyone is a leader on the ground but it is nice to have the job officially. It is a vote of confidence from the match committee," Misiti said. Misiti has had an outstanding pre-season and is primed for a big year. It is excellent news for Essendon supporters - Misiti was missing with injury early last season and he was sadly missed.

Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said it was not a decision the match committee took lightly. "Joe is replacing Michael Long and he was one of the greatest leaders this club has had. Joe knows a lot is expected of him but we all believe he is up to it. He's a dual premiership player and the young players really look up to him," Sheedy said. "Joe has put in a very serious pre-season and I would like to think we are still to see the best of him."

Good stuff Joey!!

He's been a gun player for us for a long time now.

Along with having one captain, there should be one vice captain.

Why?

A leader will be a leader regardless of if it is made official by a "title."

If James Hird was stripped of the captaincy, he would still be just as good a leader.

What can I say? I have backed mysef into a corner and I have no choice but to agree with you John.

Yep, Misiti doesn't need to have the title of vice-captain to be a leader. There is nothing stopping hm being a leader anyway.

i think it was just a gesture from the club thanking him for staying at the club. It would play the same role as say a basket full of fresh fruit with a little thankyou note. I believe Joe would be dissapointed - he would have much prefered the hamper of fruit.

I'm a bit torn here.
On the one hand, I personally think one captain, a vice-captain for when the captain's out.
but- people are not as strong leaders without that title.
if someone who's been at the club for ten years tells you to do something, you're probably going to do it, right? but if the captain tells you to do it, you'll jump straight to it. a little less so for vice-captain, but not much.
so you're more likely to follow the captain than somebody else with the same amount of experience.
BUT- if you have five vice-captains, then you're diluting the effect of that title.
And on top of that, you have to have a pre-eminent vice-captain, the person who'll be captain if Hird goes down. so that means the rest are really vice-vice-captains, and that's just getting stupid.
