Yeah - I noticed this all year. We go for Tackles that Don’t Stick or Missed. Drives you Mad and could stop a lot of the Runs of Goals we have against us.

Great Stat that our Forward Tackling after Qtr time was Terrible and that is why the Dees got back in the Game.

Though we are 5th in the League for Average Tackles per Game. We be Number 1 IF more Sticked

You can understand it when they can't reach or keep up with a player. But when they have them within arms reach and let them slip away or do a fend off then it's bloody frustrating. So many opposition goals seem to occur immediately following a gettable tackle not sticking.

Which are the really good tackling teams? Need to spy on their training.

I've noticed the same thing. We tend to play a high-risk, high-reward style of defence at time it seems. We commit two people to the ball carrier to make a tackle, which theoretically leaves a man free but increases our chance of causing a turnover via the tackle. The problem is though when the tackle doesn't stick or at least result in a poor disposal we can get cut up by it. Of course, we've seen the pressure that it applies and benefits when done correctly.

This has been a bug bear of mine especially for the last few weeks now.

We simply seem to miss too many tackles, then Bucks Brief is released and Bucks says that we only stuck 2 out of 16 tackles inside the forward zone after quarter time on Monday.

THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

And it's nothing new. How to fix it? A rugby tackling coach maybe?

Anyway, here's Bucks Brief;

I can't remember which game but Bucks was talking about the same thing a few weeks back when the tackle attempt was even higher about 70 and the amount that stuck was in the teens.

We are a decent tackling side overall but we could definitely be better. Some of our young arms need to pump some more iron for one thing. We also need to make the tackles count more and make sure the player being tackled is tackled quickly to the ground and thus taken out of the play. Also I think too many times we have 2 players tackling one opposition and that just leaves us short in the hunt for the ball.

Just guessing but it was probably the Cats game, where even though we laid a lot of tackles the Cats were still able to move the ball on to the free man.

That game was so frustrating that way.

Couldn't agree more Matty and I'm all for a specialist rugby coach .:thumbsu:

The perfect tackle IMO is to target the hips and pin an opponents arm/ arms in the process. Players seem to be drawn more to watching the head/ shoulders rather than the hips and as a result are going to high and therefore not sticking tackles, being easily brushed off or missing the opponent all together.

My one concern is the perfect tackle requires a player to stay low and as a result commit low with their head something the umpires are red hot against ATM.

Regardless I'm all for improving the tackling skills of our team, maybe Billy Slater and Cameron smith could drop in from time to time.

Maybe this will be the positive of having Nick Maxwell work with the Storm for a season. When he returns to the club (and he will) he will bring a new aspect that hopefully includes a focus on tackling.

It's one area of the game you really can get an advantage over your opponent, if your players can perfect their tackling techniques.

It was the one thing that was standing out when Melbourne got their run(s) on during the game. North game 1st half the same, Geelong game the same too.

Wondering, is it a technical thing, or an attitude thing. Or both?

I don't think it's youth but more so size. We have a lot of small blokes in the side. Blair is the worst offender and Steele misses a few as well.

Cloke and Goldsack are beasts in this regard. They just smash players with their tackles, especially Goldsack. He makes sure they hurt. Fasolo, De Goey and Grundy are also good at it.

One of the main things you see in the NRL is the tackler trying to wrap up the ball so that the guy carrying it cant offload. A bigger focus on that would be good, although theyre probably trying to do that already

This was most noticeable to me during our game against the Cats.

Whilst sometimes it may come down to size and technique, I think much of it relates to attitude and intensity. We don't have to bury players all the time (although it would be nice), but restricting and preventing their ability to get their arms free and dish off will suffice.

Speaks volumes to me that Marley Williams, coming from a rugby background, is one of our best tacklers I think because firstly he has a better technique but also his intensity at the contest this year has been first rate.

Agree re: youth to a point but not size i.e. Blair as your example.

Some of the best tacklers in the game were not blessed with size or bulk.

To name a couple that fall into this category both past and present without research includes the likes of T. Libba, T. Francis, J. Platten, and in the modern era Rioli, Jack and Dahlhaus etc.

Technique is key in providing confidence to enable the individual to fully commit to laying a tackle.

I think because of the zone style setup we are too easily stepped around. Our players rush from one position to the next zone and in doing so over commit which allows the opposition an easy side step and away they go. Only thing our players can do is stick out an arm (Varco style) and hope they don't lose a wing. I would like to see us corral them a bit more rather than over commit. This slows down the play and allows players like Marleyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to come in and smashem.

Fear also helps make the opposition panic so we need harder players with an intent to hurt. ATM we have few the opposition would be scared of. The raging bull Cloke playing higher up the ground, Marley, Degoey, Crisp need to more assistance. Hopefully Greenwood and Adams can step up soon with some physical presence.

Small tweaks Bucks will work on I'm sure with this green side.

Our tackling technique often appears to be thus:
1. Run insanely towards target (coaches love effort above all).
2. Get easily sidestepped.
3. a) Fall over from over-commitment,
or b) grab opponents hips with fingertips and slingshot around them while they lazily handball away to their team mate.
4. Rinse. Repeat.

If we want to play this high pressure game plan, we need to tidy this area up pronto.

Just an aside....but maybe we're spending less time practicing tackling since we can average 50-75 tackles a game and end up getting 2 free kicks for a game?
;)
Crispo doesn't miss too many tackles, nor DeGoey....we need more brutes like those two.

Hi guys we do have a tackling coach who comes from a martial arts background, judo, wrestling etc. I was actually speaking with him after the cats game through work and he was saying that he the weeks leading up to that game that hadnt done any tackling practice as the coaches wanted to focus on other areas, ie game plan etc
