I'm going on a three-month drive around Australia trip later in the year and looking at options for getting online with the laptop on the way.

Anyone got any experiences or recommendations on the best way to achieve this? ie cost, coverage. I don't expect to be able to get access in every remote area, but getting it in more than just capital cities would be nice.

Mainly want email access, but also some web browsing and probably a bit of FTPing (website updates) as well.

not 3, outside of the 5 mainland capitals there is nothing.

Telstra have the best coverage, but you pay for it. check the coverage maps on the various sites to see where you are going and if there is coverage where you want.

I recently bought a prepaid dongle from optus for a trip away - their coverage was better than 3 or vodaphone (at least in the area I was headed), not as good as telstras but not bad. The prices were a lot better however.

I might have a look at them - the telstra prices are pretty steep. The 3 coverage is nowhere near good enough (even though I can't get the coverage maps on their site to work)

Yep telstras data rates on those things are ridiculous. I think Optus might have a special on the dongles too, dongle+1gb for 70 dollars or so. Started just after I bought mine so it's kinda etched in memory lol
