Hi, I am having modem problems at the moment and was wondering if anyone could help me. I used to use my housemates computer, but he was an overseas student and has gone back to live in his country. So when I tried to connect to the net on my PC the modem didn't even dial, however their were lights and the computer did detect the modem. What lights are meant to be on and which ones are meant to be off before you are connected to the internet? My modem is 56k. I'm not sure if its my modem or my Internet provider (go connect which i have not used for about 8 months).
Sorry if i am being vague, but i know **** all about computers. Any help will be much appreciated.

Oh my God man! ****! This is seriously...

Nothing. The sound on your modem is switched off. And you are obviously connected to the net if you're posting here. As for what lights should be on, or flashing these ones usually indicate traffic:
RD and TD.

LOL, I should have explained that I am at my brother's place, using his compuuter. How dumb do you think I am? Don't answer that.

Go to "Dial-up networking". Right click on the appropriate icon (the one that has your ISP's connection) and go dwon to properties.

Mess around with those settings. Usually all that is required is for you to turn "pulse dialling" off (which is easily found under "modems" in the control panel). But honestly, it could be a number of things.

Ohh, another problem might be that your modem isn't connected to the phone line ;)
