I am looking for a modem that has 4 ethernet ports and wireless internet. Im not sure but i think most wireless modem have 4 ports but anyway i just want to no if anyone could recommend a decent modem or brand or a shop to get them from of a modem that has good wireless connectivity that doesn't cut out to often. I really don't no anything about modems so just any advice would help? I'm hoping to pay around $150. Also the wireless internet will mainly be used for a laptop, i have a ps3 but i was just planning to connect that via ethernet port just for quicker connection.
Thanks

I use a Billion 7300G, cost 99 bucks, 4 port wireless, ADSL2 compliant.

Its got reasonable range, i can certainly get a connection from anywhere in my house, even through walls. For the price its a pretty good modem, obviously there's better modems with greater range and VoiP abilities, but you pay for it.

It's been absolutely fine for me, although apparently some people have a had a few issues with certain ISP's, drop outs and the like.

The netgears are pretty popular.

Your modem sounds exactly like what i need. Where abouts did you get it? Im not going to the shops to get it im just wondering where a good place to buy a modem from would be, maybe Jb Hifi or a computer shop?

Got mine from PLE in Perth.

They're one of the most popular modems going around tho, so it shouldn't be hard to track one down.

I sell Zyxel. They are much better than the Netgears, Dlinks and Billions of the world and priced around the same. How ever - they are much harder to find if you`re a consumer.

BTW - PLE are great to deal with and are competative.

Thanks heaps for your help guys. I think im gonna try the PLE place. I was looking at the MDM D-LINK DSL-G604T WLESS ADSL ROUTER. What do you guys think? Its mainly going to be used for a the computer internet via ethernet cable, ps3 via ethernet cable and laptop via wireless internet.

Awesome, another thing i no everyone with wireless complains how it cuts out and stuff, but exactly how long will it cut out for and how often should i expect it to happen?

Mine never cuts out - and I connect to 4 different Access points during the working day. Shouldn`t be a problem in a typical home environment.

With wireless - make sure you employ at the very least WEP encryption. People bang on about it being insecure and yet they (and most everyone else) would never be able to crack it. If you have some computer nouse you can set up WPA.

I saw some review on the dlink modem that gave it 2 stars out of 5 so ive changed my mind and im going with the Billion 7401 VGPM. One thing i cant understand the description it just goes on about all this crap, can anyone tell me how many ethernet ports it has?

Voice over IP - Kind of like Skype. It`s what the FXS and FXO relates to. It wont make a difference for what you want to do however some of those prices are a bit expensive if all you need is wireless/lan and internet access.

I've ordered my modem. Just another thing what does it take to set it up, do you just unplug the old one and plug in the new or is it difficult to set up.

Generally there is some set up to hook up to a pc.

Usually you have to plug it all in, then browse to an IP address using IE/Firefox etc that gives you access to the modems settings.

You then need to input your ISP user ID and password. Sometimes DNS name servers etc.

Just follow the instructions mate, nothing too hard.

My netgear modem/router did everything for me. All I had to do was put in th username/password and which ISP i am with and it worked straight away.

The new D-Link Gaming Routers look great, QoS, gigabit ethernet and soon they will have 802.11n.

Mancey i ordered mine from that PLE place u got yours, how long did yours take to deliver? I ordered it late friday night before the long weekend so pretty much tuesday so i dont expect it to be here by now, i was just wondering. Also i was expecting an email maybe saying we have received your order or something but havent got anything, did u recieve anything? This is of course all if you did order yours you may have picked it up from the shop i dont no?

Yeah just picked mine up.

I've ordered stuff but, and if you live locally you usually get it next day. Interstate is obviously gonna take a few days i'd say.

Now im just a little bit worried. Still no modem or email from the company. Is this normal?

Just ring em mate. They aren't some faceless company working out of a house or anything. They do heaps of business, not dodgy at all.

PLE are great, would recommend them to anyone. And parts are cheapest in Perth i have found.

I emailed them and they sent me an email back saying they have received my order and it was sent out wednesday so i should receive it shortly

i dont know much about modems, but i read this and cringed. d-link + online console gaming dont go together. well at least mine didnt. i had a 504G and i threw the piece of shit out after i went and got a Billion 7300 for $89.

it was endless problems with the d-link trying to get the NAT settings open so i could connect to a lot more people on the xbox. it wouldnt work, so i got the billion and i didnt even need to configure it and the settings were open.

overall i'd agree with the 1st response in this thread. Cant go wrong with the Billion 7300 at $89 if you are after something cheap and its ADSL2 compatable.

I used a d link 504 with my 360 for a while. Was plug and play...no issue

#shrug#

Did have updated firmware in it tho...i think?
