I've downloaded at 20kb/s.

The secret is finding the file with the lowest bandwidth ('ping' if you like). You can sort from lowest to highest by clicking on the bandwidth row once you have completed a search. Most file sharing proggies of this type (napster-esque) operate by the same system ... you just have to know how to use them correctly to get optimal use out of them. :)

Hope some of you understood that codswhoppop! ;)

hehe.. morpheus, nice piece of codswallop!

downloading at uni, i could get varying rates...
had up to 300 once, but usually, above 20 is a good rate..
but usually around 15-20...

all depends on the person u are downloading from..
if the guy is on a 56k dialup, u arent gonna get as fast downloads as a person on a T3 line in the states..

ftp sites? ah.. gave up on that..
in the old days of mp3 sharing (when it was all on ftp).. when i found a good one, its usually closed very soon.. upload/download ratios suck.. getting disconnected after uploading pisses one off severely.. :p

Morpheus is great.

If you have a 56 k modem like me, just download when ya sleeping....

Ive downloaded a few things off it.

- Training Day (The Movie)
- The Others (The Movie)
- Swordfish (The Movie)
- The score (The Movie)
- Nero Full version
- About 100 mp3's
- Various soccer clips
- Championship Manager 2000/01

Mine usually downloads 4.5- 6 kb/sec

Pardon my ignorance, but which is the better file to download? The one with the lowest bandwidth figure or the highest?

Lowest bandwidth :)

For mp3's ... the higher the bitrate ... the greater the quality.

BANDWIDTH.... you'd go for the higher figure !!

just looking on my 56k dialup, the highest bandwidth figure i get is 42....

sheesh.. re downloading full movies, how long did it take?

well, thanks to u..
i'm gonna give it a go... downloading a movie on my 56k dialup..
downloading 'Jay & Silent Bob strikes back'...

on 5.7kb/sec... not too shabby at all... hahah.. 2 files... 194mb each... %#@

hmmm.. while i'm at it, does anyone have any scripts, or network dialup tools, that have a feature, where if i get disconnected, it will automatically re-connect to my ISP ?? (so i can resume this fat ass download).. cant find a setting which allows this, so i think i gotta get a new network dialing app, or tool ? any ideas? ta..

I dunno why but when I click on the Iprimus Icon, it coems up with a normal dial up thing.

But when I click on Internet Explorer when im not connected, it comes up with dial up thing which has a box "Automatically connect" or somethin.

Btw I do movies in abotu 2 days. But I let it download while im asleep.

I think you're/we're confusing bandwidth with ping. Ping is the response from one computer to another or a server ... bandwidth being the amount of packets you can download at a time (per second). Of course you'd go for a higher bandwidth ... but a lower ping.

The bandwidth figure on Morpheus ... is actually a 'ping'. :)

I'm downloading off kaaza.com at the moment which looks exactly the same as Morpheus. I have allowed myself to become confused by reading this thread (not hard to do btw).:D

The song I am downloading has two different versions with two different bandwidths. One is 16 and the other is 1024. Which is the preferred option to use? On Napster if I recall correctly the higher the ping the better which in this case would be 1024.

You clarification would be greatly appreciated.

You're confusing two issues there.

Bandwidth is basically how much data the file's owner can shove towards you at a time. This is obviously limited by what you can receive at a time, but in order to maximise your download, yes go for the higher bandwidth.

Ping is a time response, measuring how long it takes your computer to communicate with the remote computer. Low ping is better, it means your computers can communicate faster, i.e. let each other to send more data.

Imagine these scenarios:
- high ping, low bandwidth: the remote computer will only send you small chunks of data at a time, and it will take a while for the received OK messages to arrive, so slow becomes slower while the remote computer waits to know if it should send more.

- low ping, high bandwidth: the remote computer will shove a large chunk of data down the connection in one shot, and the moment your computer sends the received OK signal, another massive chunk will get shoved at you. This is the ideal situation :)

frickkk... this is confusing me as well...

ok, i recall.. from using Napster.. the figure to look at was labelled as 'PING'.... i always used the lower figure here.. for the best/fastest downloads...

however, with morpheus... there is a figure labelled as 'BANDWIDTH'... from my experience, i've always used the higher figure, as the download times have been quicker...

so... as the topic is Morpheus... in the search screen.. we got the following columns...
name... artist... song... file size.. download time... and more importantly, BANDWIDTH...
this bandwidth figure... the higher the better correct?! argh!

:p

Yes, in morpheus it is. I don't know whether the Bandwidth figure in morphues is a ping, or a rating out of 50 say, T3 being 50 and T1 being 41 etc. Whenever I connect to someone with a morphues bandwith of 40+ I get around 5kbps. Which is great.

Got it!! Thanks guys - the higher the number the better so in my example the bandwidth of 1024 was the preferred version over the song with the bandwidth of 16.

I guess PING is irrelevant with Morpheus as it is not shown anyway like it was on Napster.

(tried) reading some of the stuff posted previously....still don't get what you computer know-it-alls are on about.   :p

anyway what is the difference b/t Morpheus and Imesh?
if there is, which one is the better program thingy?
i've had imesh but it was pretty crap so then i d/l kazza which was wayyyyy better.
or maybe i should be asking,
what is the difference b/t Morpheus and Kazza and which one is better?

yea, that's my question

I downloaded Morpheus yesterday - It's great!

But as i sit here listening to Movies by Alien Ant Farm I can't help but wonder why Morpheus hasn't been closed down when it is almost identical to Napster??
