Morphing avatars?

I was just wondering how do you morph (I think that's the word! ) avatars from one image to another. They look pretty cool and I wouldn't mind having one of my own.

I gather you need some type of image program for it, I've got the Gimp Image Program at home. Is it pretty easy for a beginner to do or it takes a bit of skill and practice?

get a program that makes animated jpegs/gifs
