What is the premiership side with the least superstars, just a lot of good average players who work hard. I'd have to go Collingwood 1990:

B Kerrison, Christian, Gayfer
HB Morwood, Kelly, Crosisca
C Millane, Shaw, Wright
HF Banks, Manson, Barwick
F Russell, Brown, Daicos
Foll Monkhorst, McGuane, Francis
Int Turner, Starcevich

What do you think?

How did I know that this would be the first team mentioned?

You probably should do your research. The Pies had 6 All Australians in 1990. Peter Daicos (kicked 97 goals), Mick McGuane, Darren Millane (also won the Players MVP), Scott Russell, Tony Shaw (Norm Smith Medallist), Graham Wright (also runner up in the brownlow). Gavin Brown was a champion. In the GF Starcevich dominated at centre half forward before being knocked out, Monkhorst slammed Madden (who was AA), the backline killed the bombers only allowing 5 goals for the day.

The pies had 22 winners on the day... and that included 2 players playing with concussion and one with a broken thumb.

My vote is for the Sydney 2005 team. Goodes is the only superstar in that side. Collingwoods 2002 side (G.F) was pretty average, along with Melb's 2000.

Reality is that it is a TEAM GAME. You can look average on paper, but the team that works best together is what is required to win a flag.

Interesting you posted because it gives me the opportunity to pick out a few good names.

N.Smart- dashing defender played 278 AFL games, 3x AA
B.Hart -Wonderful player, 311 games, 4x AA
M.Bickley- 272 games
M.Riccuito- 312 games, 8x AA twice as Captain, BL Medal
S.Goodwin- 260 games At least 3x AA? (will admit junior at this stage)
T. Edwards - 300 games
A McLeod- 300 games, 3x AA,1x Captain 2x Norm Smith
D Jarman- 230 games, 386 goals
S Rehn- AA, best ruckman in the comp
K Johnson- 230 games, later Captain of Richmond.

P. Caven- I feel a very under rated CHB
M. Robran- no superstar but a strong target at CHF
T.Modra - didnt play GF but one of best FF of modern era!
D. Pittman- superb no.2 ruckman would of been a good no.1 at any other club
S. Ellen- average player but kicked 5 on GF day!

Sure, Koster, Brett James, Eccles, Marsh, Theissen were average, but the team had some genuine stars in midfield, defence and forward and a lot of experience!

At the time Barry Hall was as well. Kennelly, ROK, O'Loughlin and Kirk were pretty good as well.

Leo Barry, Craig Bolton, (I forget the name of your ruckman...Ball?), Matthew Nicks, Nick Fosdike, Jude Bolton...all very good players in my opinion, not superstars but all very good reliable players no matter what side they played for!

I believe Bickley was a very underated player. If he had of played on the eastern seaboard he would be much more highly regarded the man was a freak in contests and in the centre bounces. Ricciuto was one of the best players in he league for a long time. Edwards also very underated player and Jarman a magnificent gamebreaker along with freak skills. along with everything said in the above quote they also had quite a good coach in Malcolm Blight. Hardly an average team

Well 'average' teams don't win flags, but if you're talking about a lack of star talent on paper, it is hard to argue with the 05 Swans - they ground out a lot of wins with the emphasis on team, rather than individual brilliance.

exactly, Bickley was underated because he didn't do the flashy things, but he was very important. Use to fight at the bottom of the packs and as you said dominate contests and clearances, he was also a fantastic tackler, once he grabbed you it was over.

Jarman was a ripper, looked like he was always going at a canter threatening to crack a gallop and break the game open!

Tyson Edwards, I don't know what he has to do to be considered elite. He is rated Adelaide but in Melbourne he seems to be overlooked.

Malcolm Blight was definitely a great coach. He also made the bold and unpopular move at the time of delisting Craig McDermott, Tony McGuinness and Andrew Jarman three club champions but I think it was a great move, cleaned out a lot of the big opinions and he was able to start with what he considered his own side.

Sorry FT, I don't find your work very inspiring. You have pulled 2 teams out of your special place that are certainly not average. The Adelaide side had several A graders, and the Dons 2000 weren't bad either.
