Simpson in clear, Schammer offered a week

Mon 11 May, 2009

A ONE-MATCH striking sanction offered to Fremantle's Byron Schammer is the most serious penalty to come out of the match review panel's analysis of the first seven games of round seven.

Schammer, 23, has been charged with a level two striking offence for his hit on Carlton's Marc Murphy during the fourth quarter of Saturday night's match at Gold Coast Stadium.

Fremantle will need to clear the midfielder's name at the tribunal this week if he is to face Hawthorn on Friday night, as his carry-over demerit points mean his one-game ban cannot be reduced with an early plea.

The incident, which saw Schammer reported on the spot, was assessed as intentional conduct, low impact and of contact to the body.

If Schammer takes an early plea, he will miss one week and carry 46.48 points for the next year. If he fights the charge and loses, he will still miss the one match but will have 95.31 points hanging over his head.

The panel also assessed the match day report laid against North Melbourne's Adam Simpson, and deemed his bump on Port Adelaide's Kane Cornes to be "to the shoulder and of only negligible high contact", and therefore legal.

Simpson's Lindsay Thomas has been charged with a striking offence for an incident involving Port Adelaide's Steven Salopek.

Thomas can accept a reprimand and 60 points with an early plea, while risking an increase in carry-over points to 80 should he fight and lose his case at the tribunal.

Elevated Geelong rookie Shane Mumford has been charged with negligently making contact with umpire Matt Stevic during the fourth quarter of Saturday's Geelong-Sydney Swans clash at Skilled Stadium.

The 22-year-old can accept a $1950 sanction with an early plea, as his actions were not considered reckless owing to the fact he "did not set up directly behind the umpire".

Contact between Essendon's Nathan Lovett-Murray and Hawthorn's Gary Moss, between Port Adelaide's Matt Thomas and North Melbourne's Simpson, and further contact between Carlton's Murphy and Fremantle's Schammer was also reviewed and did not constitute a reportable offence.
