Played this on the weekend (original edition with no expansions) with some mates, neither of whom had played it before. Even went down well with the mate who's only somewhat interested in boardgames.

Just wondering what age, in general, people reckon is good to give this as a gift to a kid. I ask as I have a godson who's turning 8 later in the year.

My son is 10 and plays this. One of his friends is also 10 and is completely stumped by the rules. Depends on the child I think.

In a broad sense it's a simple game, but it does take a bit to get your head around the mechanics when starting out, or not having played it for a while (which was our experience on the weekend).

I would say its a bit tough for an 8 year old unless he's got some older siblings to teach him while they play.

No, but his dad is of a geekish mind, so would think he'd be able to help out.

Depends on the kid as above. I don't think it's a great game really but maybe kids love it. I get bored.

To appreciate and really enjoy munchkin I think you need that background of rgp's and the associated themes.
Putting such a game in front of a 8yo who's never heard of DnD (or derivatives) it's not going to have the same appeal -and therefore be harder to 'get into'.
I reckon that applies irrespective of age to a degree.

I've played dice RPG's and MMORPGers etc and there are some mildly amusing tropes. But they are few and far between and dwindle after a few games.

Have been growing my Munchkin collection by scouring Gumtree and ebay. Grabbed myself expansions 3 & 4 to go with the base set, and Zombies 1-4.

My housemate picked up Marvel Munchkin the other day. Looks more like a standalone than an expansion. The game plays the same but the cards look totally different to your normal Munchkin cards.

They are a bit of both. The core sets are stand alone games that require nothing else, but you can use them with any other sets as an expansion.

The expansions are expansions for the core sets e.g. Munchkin Marvel 2 & 3 need the Munchkin Marvel core set, but you can mix the Munchkin Zombies cards in there too if you like.
