Keeping up my new tradition of informative and thought provoking posts, so as to not annoy *certain individuals* here, read below:

A 15 year old school girl has been murdered in the outer suburbs of Adelaide. Samantha O'Reilly took a 10 minute walk to her local shopping mall but never returned home. Three hours later her body was found beside a dirt road. Police have no idea about motive or the identity of her killer.

Her computer has been seized and enquiries made into her personal life so to perhaps gain an insight into facets that she may not have told her parents - such as meeting an internet friend on the day of her murder, whether or not she had a boyfriend etc..

I don't know about you all, but this made me sick. You can't even take a short walk without fearing for your safety.....

She went to my sons school. I won't be letting the kids out on their own now, not that they ever went that far from home, but I think my cautiousness is justified now.

Absolutely - good on you!

This sort of thing makes me scared to death of being a parent. I used to walk to school on my own when i was 6 years old. I doubt i could let a child of mine do the same thing these days.

I use to ride my bike along the road where she was taken quite regularly. It is quite scary, family members still live and work in the area.
Things like this happened when I was growing up in Elizabeth Downs and Munno Para - but you know what, you can't let it change the way you live your life.
There could be more to this than we know - she may not have been kidnapped randomly (as the investigations being reported in the news are suggesting) - and we shouldn't go hiding because of it.
Then again, it's not me whose been affected by this is it. I can't imagine how that family must feel, I really hope they can get through and lead a normal sort of life some time in the next five years. Sadly it's not likely though is it?

Scary stuff, I can't imagine what her family is going through.

Is it just me or does Adelaide have a really really high number of violent murders?

A family can never truly recover. My next door neighbour still signs her daughter's name on Christmas cards, 10 years after she died in a car crash aged 5. As Dogwatcher said, you just can't imagine it happening to yourself.

Charlie

My nephew was killed in 1980 and almost 23 years later it still hurts to think about. You never get over it. It's probably the reason I've always been very protective of my boys and why we lived in the hills away from the rat race for nine years. Our main reason for moving back was for their cricket commitments and the fact that they are getting older and will be looking for work in the not too distant future. The area we live in is near there but it's a good suburb, nice and peaceful with not much happening. It's amazing how different each suburb is. I feel very sorry for her family, I know what mine went through and still go through.

unfortunately, such is the way of the world now.. it is a sad and sorry thing that now you are not safe enough to take a 10 minute walk.. we need to do something about this... and quick.

 What kind of a clown are you??

Although i dont particularly like Adelaide, every time there is a murder there, poorly informed people like yourself get on the "freaky murder city " band wagon.
A young bloke was bashed to death on NYE in Sydney, no outrage (on BF) there, or is to be expected in NSW.
Unfortunately the world we live in is a scary place for young and old, with the prospect of war, terrorism, refugees etc. If we got rid of some of the finger pointing and paranoia, it would go a long way towards curing some of these problems.

Which Australian city has the highest crime rate? And which per capita?

In the US, Detroit held that 'honor' for years. Last year, St. Louis passed them up. St. Louis is whining about it, and saying statistics are "misleading." IMO a body count is pretty straight-forward. Unless Detroit was using them as a dumping ground.

My sympathy for the family and friends of the dead Adelaide girl.

Peace,
