Nets Statement on Mutombo
The New Jersey Nets have agreed in principle to request waivers on Dikembe Mutombo. "Dikembe is a first-class individual, and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors," team president Rod Thorn said Saturday, Oct.

No real surprise there, with the Nets signing Zo.
I wonder if Boston will try and have a shot at him, despite his age, as the Celts are in dire need of a top notch center.

if mutombo goes to Ny as reported then they will lose what ever credibility they had left. Its time for Ny to go for youth and stop getting old players on huge contracts e.g

LJ
Luc longley
Weatherspoon
Shandon Anderson

even keith van horn is on a big contract and he is a dud.they gave houston 100 million for no reason.they are becoming the laughing stock of the league.at least the clippers dont pay stupid prices for their players.

Deke has signed with the Knicks.

I can see Kurt Thomas' smile from here. Finally he is able to move back to his more natural 4 spot.

If the Knicks could acquire a PG, they would be pretty damn solid.

A) Deke is being paid $4.5M US per season, hardly a "huge contract".

B) Keith Van Horn is anything but a dud.

Loving it! :D

Deke still has alot left in him i feel and like phat said, Kurt Thomas would be delighted!!
$4.5 mill a season is a steal really...especially considering what ridiculous salaries most of our squad are ....receiving....i almost said earning.
I agree with jerry springer too that we need to go young, but i still see this as a pickup we badly needed. In the long run i think having Deke can help us ease Lampe and Sweetney into the rotation without slamming too much pressure onto their shoulders right from the start. This is alot better than the likes of Luc Longley who played a few garbage minutes for us then retired while we continued to fork over cash to him. Not to mention LJ :D and to think we gave up a star like Anthony Mason for his broken down body....although i love what the trade did for Mase's career.

If by some miracle Charlie Ward and Frank Williams can have strong seasons we'll be quite respectable in the East. I've long given up on Howard Eisley.

for a number 2 pick he is a dud

Didn't realise players should be judged on their draft position.

I couldn't care less about what position a player got drafted some 7 years ago, his performance now is what matters.

In no way is KVH a dud.

IIRC, #2 is a cursed draft position anyhoo.

Eisley is the starter, and will remain so, it seems.

you would hope with picks 1-3 that you could pick up a franchise player or a least a perennial all-star.KVN has shown nothing since joining the NBA and that is why he is playing for his 3rd team in 7 years.Unless he discovers what defence is he wont last long under the harsh NY spotlight.

You've already got two quality centres fighting for minutes.

Between Erick Dampier and Adonal Foyle, and even factoring in the pickup of Clifford Robinson as well, I think Mutumbo might be better than any of those guys. Better defensively, anyway.

I doubt he'd sign with us, but what's a little more depth, huh? ;)

Knicks add strength, experience at center

ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- Dikembe Mutombo signed a contract with the New York Knicks on Thursday, two days after he accepted a buyout and was waived by the New Jersey Nets.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Adding a shot blocker and rebounder of Dikembe's caliber to our team dramatically improves key areas that we were looking to upgrade," Knicks president and GM Scott Layden said on Thursday. "His basketball resume is so impressive that having the chance to add him to our club was something we were not going to pass up. In addition to his superior skills on the court, Dikembe is a role model that all of young players will look up to and learn from."

The Knicks were the worst shot-blocking team in the NBA last season when they missed the playoffs for the second straight season.

Kurt Thomas, a natural power forward, has been the Knicks' starting center for most of the past two seasons.

Mutombo played in only 24 games last season because of a wrist injury that required surgery around Thanksgiving. The 37-year-old did not return to action until late in the regular season and was sitting on the bench for most of the playoffs.

Mutombo, 7-2, 261-pounds, is the NBA's sixth all-time shot blocker with 2,873 rejections and is the only player in history to be named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year four-times (1995, 1997, 1998, 2001). He was named to the All-NBA second team in 2001 and the third team in 1998 and 2002. A three-time NBA All-Defensive first team selection and three-time second team selection, Mutombo ranks first in blocked shots among active players.

"I know Dikembe very well through the years and there is no question he'll fit right into our system and thrive," coach Don Chaney said. "There aren't many players in NBA history that can change the course of a game as much as he does."

The Nets, currently for sale, cited financial concerns in announcing the buyout of the final two years of Mutombo's contract, which had $37 million remaining on it. Mutombo's chances of playing more this season diminished with Jason Collins and Aaron Williams returning and Alonzo Mourning, Mutombo's teammate at Georgetown, signing with New Jersey as a free agent.

Mourning criticized the move Sunday, saying it showed the two-time defending Eastern Conference champions were more interested in money than in winning a championship.

Mutombo averaged 5.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.54 blocks last season. He appeared in 10 playoff games, including six NBA Finals games versus the San Antonio Spurs, to average 10.3 minutes and record totals of 10 points and 17 rebounds.

Averaged 17 and 7 last year.

If that is "nothing", then there are about 300 NBA players who have done less than nothing.

KVH ain't a superstar, but to say he's a dud and has done nothing is ludicrous.

call me ludicrous

last years stats

G GS MPG FG% 3P% FT% RPG APG SPG BPG TO PF PPG
74 73 31.6 .482 .369 .804 7.10 1.3 .85 .41 2.03 3.40 15.9

Averages 12.3ppg and 6.60 rpg in the play-offs during his career

DUD

KVH is not a dud. He may not be a player worthy of the 2nd pick of a draft, but he is a solid player in the NBA. If you define KVH as a dud then what does that make the other 80% of the players in the NBA. A team has to all different types of players to be successful and believe it or not, KVH fills a role and does a good job.

To call him a dud shows complete lack of NBA knowledge. He hasn't had an Allstar calibre career but he's been more then solid.

12.3ppg and 6.6rpg are not dud numbers either, whether it be in the regular season or the playoffs. Dud players will put up 2.1ppg and 1.3rpg and will reach double figures once in a blue moon, KVH is not in that category.
